Tracy,
The soft skills are almost as important as the technical knowledge and skills. I think more workers are let go because of attendance, punctuality, or compliance with other work rules. Instilling the value and benefit of conformance to employer expectations can contribute to long lasting, sustained employment.

Most students seek out education to obtain a skill set they can use to make money and find a career. An educated student will take the skills and knowledge taught to them and adapt it to the work place. Our goal for teaching must also place emphasis on soft skills. They must be successful with soft skills to fit in and behave professionally.

Chris,
These are great inspirational goals that if attained, would contribute to greatness in both personal achievement and optimal effectiveness in the work setting. Creating a positive atmosphere for learning is one way to approach getting students fired up about their program of study.

What is the goal of educating students?

I believe the goal of educating students is firstly to inspire students to love learning. Other goals for educating students are to teach them about experiences and commitments that help them realize their full potential; to inspire and encourage students to strive for greatness; to expand and deepen their knowledge in many fields;and teach them that learning is a lifelong commitment.

Mickey,
Very true. We can help our students by providing the needed skills and knowledge, but also life skills that may be lacking are as important for students to acquire and retain employment afterwards.

Barry Westling

The goal of educating students should be to help prepare them for life, specifically in the career world. We need to provide students the opportunity to obtain the skills necessary to be successful in a career. We should help instill in the students a desire to learn not only what is presented in the course, but also that which is outside of the scope of the course. This desire to learn will increase the chances of success of the students as they will go above and beyond what is expected thus making them better applicants for jobs in their chosen careers.

Kathleen,
I think this is a wonderful sentiment, as a skill or trade learned and applied can have an overarching power to create happiness and stability, and create a hope for a brighter future.

Barry Westling

The goal of educating students is to prepare them for the world. It is our hope as instructors that we help to prepare and shape the views of our students so that they become well informed citiizens and contribute to society as a whole.

Wayne,
Sure, skills and knowledge pertinent to our students career area is our overarching goal as educators. Related "skills" that assist students in the work setting include dress and grooming, communication, punctuality and similar soft skills that employers expect. Critical thinking approaches to work situations are similarly important.

Barry Westling

The goal of educating students is to ensure that they have the basic knowledge to apply to their chosen career. Educating students should be preparing them for the work environment and their prospective employers.

Harold,
Great goal to have. Skills and knowledge are worth little if the student is not able to transfer what was learned in school to the workplace, eh?

Barry Westling

Shannon,
In career education, the focus is often on the the skills, knowledge, and overall readiness to safely and satisfactorily seek and find employment. Along with what you mention, students should be adequately prepared if we achieve these goals.

Barry Westling

The main goal of educating students is to give them marketable skills that are transferrable to the workplace.

To provide enough information to allow student to use critical thinking, to learn professionalism, and prepare for thier chosen career with great sucess

Glenn,
Students enroll in programs, usually to get a job. Of course they need the knowledge and skills, but also communication, dress and grooming, and good writing skills make for better employees. Any way we can add some of these traits probably help.

Barry Westling

My goal is to prepare them for a career in NDT inspection.

Michael,
Yes, and if students can get on the same page as their instructor, the transfer of that essential knowledge is much more of a realistic goal.

Barry Westling

I need to transfer my knowledge of a subject to a student to the extent that they can use that knowledge to pursue their career.

Todd,
Very true, when a student understands, you can ask nearly any relevant question and they will be able to reason out a likely answer -- that's a good indication of learning.

Barry Westling

Information delivery and retention is great and all. But, understanding is so much better, a student then can look past the information and start to see what can happen. Also giving someone a skill set to help with employment and future education is not bad ether.
