Role of instructor personality in delivery selection

What role does your personality play in the selection of delivery methods for your courses?

Hi Heidi:

I think that's an excellent approach. One thing that may be effective in involving ALL students is to prepare their names individually on note cards, then randomly select a name to answer a question.

Hi Sandra:

To paraphrase your comment - the student will pick up on how the instructor really feels. I think confidence is important, and something that promotes this in the instructor is being prepared for class for as smooth a ride as possible.

Hi Joshua:

Indeed. A balance is always important, for example, what might be the problem with being TOO humorous, TOO passionate, TOO stern, etc.?

Regards, Barry

Hi SHerri:

True. And, we need to keep in mind the idea of balance. Too much humor, or too much drole may result in a distraction to the student. Ultimately, it is the outcomes that determine this (how well they understand the concepts).

Your personality plays a large role in how your deliver the material. If you're outgoing and engaging, you're more likely to use a variety of methods to deliver the instructional information. If you're introverted, you might only use one way of delivering the material and it might not be effective to all students in your class.

Instructor's personality dictates what methods are effective in the delivery of course material and concepts to be learned. Since the instructor's level of comfort is crucial in effective implementation of methods and teaching styles, and since personality influences the level of comfort and confidence, it is very important to consider such factor to deliver effective teaching.

I try to bring a passion to the drier portions of the material and inqisitiveness to the more accessible portions.

It can help define the connection that you have with your students. If you have a "warm" personality, they may feel more connected to you. You have to convey a sense of "caring" for their success and making sure that is a genuine emotion.

The instructors personality sets the tone for the class. If you are a motivated and enthusiastic person, you will add excitement to the class. Positive energy is contagious.

I feel a smile goes a long way especially when you are dealing with a mutitude of different personaities. I teach at night but I also still work in the field. I find that the students are intrigued by real life events that happen in the field. When in a specific subject I put in an actual case study to help them relate better.

I've learned that I get along with my students very well. I respect them and in return I get the same. They seem to really respond to me at different times throughout class times.

Hi Erin:

Students may be more prone to listen to an engaging instructor than one who is monotonous.

I find the personality of instructors definitely affects the motivation of students.

Hi Terrell:

This sounds like a great learning environment. Keep in mind that too much of any kind of personality may serve to distract the student.

Hi Ulises:

Very true. Using what we are comfortable with can have an uplifting effect on the learning atmosphere.

Personality is the key to the delivery.

I believe in the power of smiling and laughter. I give the students some time and space to unwind by talking with classmates, laughing, asking questions. But I insist on their complete and undivided attention once I speak.

Very important! I make sure students see my enthusiasm in the classroom and show them that it is ok to use that.

I think that the role of the instructor plays a huge role in the how the material is delivered. For me, I have enthusiasm and passion for the subject that I teach (Surgical Technology) and because I show that enthusiasm to the students, it raises the enthusiasm in them.
