When our class is going over a subject they have long forgot throughout their eight month course I take them on little trips to their previous classes to refresh their memories that seems to ignite them!

Being a math instructor, my primary media source is the white board. To spice things up and to emphasize key points, I use 4 different colors of markers to highlight individual steps in a multi-step problem. The students like this approach because it assists them in seeing each step.

I am learning how to use a SmartBoard. This requires much more practice on my part. The first time I used one, it was more a source of entertainment for the students (and a source of frustration for me). However, as I become more adept with this resource, I can incorporate pre-made X-Y charts and other internet resources. The students appreciate the variety and it acts as a small mental break when I switch from whiteboard to SmartBoard.

I use a wide variety of media in my class to make things more interesting. Recently, I started utilizing powerpoints. Students enjoyed having the powerpoints because they were able tp print them off and write their own notes on the handouts. I also use video's to show in class.

I tend to select media which is visual and intersting to look at. My students are preparing for a creative field and are inspired by creative presentation

Media is selected to support the delivery of the content. If there is a powerpoint presentation available that will augment getting the students to understand the information to be learned in class, then it is useful. The use of media for the sake of using the media only is not the appropriate way to choose a media mode for content delivery.

I try to use a variety of media for delivery course content. I teach online and use a combination of recorded audio podcasts (audio lectures), PowerPoint, and videos. Audacity is a good free open source software for recording audio lectures in MP3 format. Students can then record the lecture and listen to the lecture on their mp3 player or iPod. I also have the option of audio lectures to play directly in the web browser.

I select media that is relevant to the course and that also makes real world connections.

Selecting media for content delivery is what I enjoy. I love trying to come up with new ideas to get the students engaged in the class. I must admit I do not have a concert process; I work more with trial and error. I also try to listen to students and what they tell me they like and what they don’t like. For example they enjoy when I find interactive websites for the medical classes. I have the website showing on the board and they take turns coming up using the website. They can work all together to accomplish the goal of the website and they can do this at home by themselves to help study for tests.

Powerpoints and white boards are some of the media we use. As a culinary instructor, demonstration is always the biggest form of teaching we like to use.

I use white boards to announce or remind of specific tasks or assignments and I use PPT with a follow-up exercise when instructing on clinical and/or administrative tasks.

I will throw in a PPT every now and then if I have the time to do it or it becomes relevent in the class. However, we need to be careful on relying on this resource too much. Sometimes I find people bored or tired of seeing so many PPT presentations that they immediately stop paying attention to them. Part of this is due to some instructors "reading" lengthy PPT slides to the audience. I would rather watch grass grow!!

Hi Robert:
Whenever the media is selected, it should amplify and enhance the lesson, not distract or just fill time. Learning should improve as the result of your many media choices available.

Regards, Barry

I select media by what is being taught that day. I will use a slide presentation so students have a visual reference to the lesson. There are also times I use an easel and flipchart that I can develop the content more spontaneously depending on the input of the students.

It depends on the class that I am teaching, when i teach routing for example I use PowerPoint’s and the white board, and instructional movies. When I am teaching intro to computer, I use mostly demonstration, followed by the students doing.

I have used everything from overhead to audio, slideshows, videos, interactive whiteboards and the regular whiteboard in my lessons. The key is to keep the media content centered and be able to explain concepts in a way students can understand. An effective media can be more beneficial to students because they are seeing it from a different source than the teacher and can back up the teachers points.

I select the media that will try to catch and maintain the attention of as many students as possible.

I use differnt media for Different presentations. Teaching Microbiology Power Point and Live Internet connection helps illustrate the world of live bugs not being able to have access of a multi million dollar Miicroscope etc....

Barry,

I use CDs and DVDs as basic "guiding tools." They help provide a visual that helps explain and instruct.

I also use a tremendous number of PDFs that I create as additional reference guides. My PDFs are interactive, and developed to guide a student through the topic or topics I am illustrating.

My class structure is dominantly built using my own experience gained during my time (40+ years) working in the real world. I also stay current with the many changes occuring in the field of marketing, design, and digital production.

All of my courses include one primary message. I stress ethics, morality, and I strive to show my students that they must love what they do.

Hi Edward:
Publisher supllied CD's and DVD's are usually helpful, but I've found they are only supplemental and I still need to create my own customized curriculum.

The instructional material that is acceptable to use has changed for this upcoming term. In all honesty, I am in the process of determining what I can and can not use.

This is becoming a monumental task.

I know that I will be using CDs and DVDs that are included with the text books that I use.

I will update you regarding this Forum Topic as I realign my course materials.

I use alot of PP for my anatomy classes. I accompany it with handouts to allow the students to take notes next to the slides. Most of my students appreciate the PP presentations as a visual aid for them. Obviously there will be some who do not prefer this technique. I try to incorporate personal experiences to give more definition to some of the material. I have used videos for certain subject matters. I always lecture about the topic no matter which media materials I choose.
