Hi Rufino:

The nice thing about back-up plans is that they can be used - no matter what, as a means of changing up the energy of the class time. This can be a good way of helping to keep our learning environments as robust as possible.

I like the idea of games, but I usually do case studies within groups. It is a good way to discuss the subject, but one important thing is the instructor must maintain control of the class so the students do not get off of subject

I keep an on-going collection of alternate approaches to assignments and units. This is very helpful when situations arise that require material be covered in a different manner than what (I find) is not working.

The personality and skill set of my classes can vary in great ways from one semester to the next. This has helped me develop alternate assignments and stock a reserve.

Additionally, I often teach at night and my students are coming to school after working a full day. Variety in presentation has made a HUGE difference in keeping them focused. This can be from individual to group work and presentations or incorporating multi-media.

Incorporating variety also shows the students the many different ways they can use these same approaches to communicating with others.

I am constantly observing my students and trying to get feedback from them on topics that are being reviewed. Some days, my course material is very lengthy and not very interesting for the students, i.e.,medical insurance or accounting for the medical office. On these days, I try to break my lecture up by either taking my students to the lab to do practical skills in between lecture hours, or will open a class discussion to get them involved again.

I usually use games, participatory techniques, stories, case studies are always interesting, students can also participate by demonstrating what they learning

I have a folder of specialized topics ready to cover that are appropriate for the course level that should class end early, these can be brought out and discussed ad hoc enhancing the course materials. I also have a series of skill sets ready for the slower learner that may address their learning needs in other dominate learning modalities.

In mathematics, I use a variety of activities to help students learn concepts and skills. I generally begin with lecture to introduce the basic concepts and procedures, but then try to quickly move to hands-on exercises, sometimes individual, sometimes groups and sometimes having one or more students go to the board to work out and show their solutions. I sometimes use "Active Learning Practices" which are PowerPoints that contain topic review questions and then display the correct answers. These can be done by going around the room and letting one student at a time try to answer the question.

I like to use games , and also videos and even youtube to re focus my students from traditional teaching methods it breaks up the routine.

I have flagged specific areas in the course where students run into trouble. I have modified my instruction to assist with this, but if students grasp concepts quickly, I have worksheets and other activities that can be done in small groups or as a whole class to reinforce the material.
