Hi Ted:

The nice thing about back-up plans is that they can be used - no matter what, as a means of changing up the energy of the class time. This can be a good way of helping to keep our learning environments as robust as possible.

I found out through experience that I should have a back-up plan. I was well trained for this position but every contingency can't be explained in training. I found over time that one plan dooesn't work for every situation; some I developed "on the run." After the first few days I can tell what type of learning ability the class has and then adapt my lessons to their learning style. My first supervisor furnished a 15-day paln for the course which I can use for reference as well.

I use a variety of instructional backup plans. In my Intro to Psychology class, I use group projects to facilitate discussion of the course content. I have used a form of the game "Jeopardy" to learn concepts (with prizes for correct answers). Small group discussions and games make the course content fun when other forms of instruction "don't get the job done".

I always try to have a number of excercises to do that are relevant to the subject I am covering. This also helps to reinforce what we have discussed in class and gives them a hands-on approach to the subject keeping them more connected.

If I find that there is a need to change my instructional plan I might tell the class that we are going to "Eat Dessert First". (BTW, I am a cooking instructor). This means that I jumble the sequence of the class. It can sometimes act as a physical motivator and bring all the minds in the room back together.

I always keep worksheets handy for each section of material that is being covered. The worksheets range from case studies to crosswords. I can also always get onto the internet and pull-up an interesting video from
special websites that are informative, yet enjoyable to watch. Depending on the personality of the class, panels can be a great learning backup.
