I would give the class a good perception of myself and classroom. Beacuse what they see of me is what they are going to get out of the course (ei. if i am tired, not prepared, etc.) they will not except me as a leader and instructor that the students will value.

Hi Steve, going into class ready. Have your expectation in check and coarse outline. Then introduce the experiance that you as an instructor bring to the class. Then time permitting have the students introduce themselves.

Hi Steve
I believe that first impressions are lasting so that first day should determine and dictate the flow of information throughout the class. I first want to make sure that I am readyie;material, books paperwork syllabus etc, up to and including physical and mental preparation.

I would stand out side of class and greet every student walking in.then introduce myself, tell alittle of my background, then have each student stand up introduce themselves and breifly tell why they are here.then go into rules, class expectations, then the material, and then go into lecture

Hi Luciano,
Good plan of action for putting together a course with all of the supporting materials. I am sure that following this plan you will be well prepared to meet the needs of your students and provide accurate and comprehensive content in course.
Gary

I would prepare by doing research on all the material that will be covered. I would then make an outline of the course, followed by what would be expected from me. Making a backup plan would be rule number one, so that I would be prepared in the event my plan did not turn out the way I wanted it to. Finally I would create a syllabus.

Hi Milton,
Good strategies all. What do you do to make sure you are motivated and ready to teach the class? Any hints or ideas?
Gary

make sure i am motivated so i can engage the students. have hand outs ready and orginized. class room should be clean and ready, with training aids set aside. class objectives listed on board, and gone over with students so they know what to expect.

ensure class room is well orginized. Have student hand outs sorted for handout. ensure that i am motivated, so i can engage students. have objectives on board.make sure that class flow is approate for the class.

To prepare for the first day I'll have my power point and white board up and ready. The tables and chairs are set the way I like them. I'll have the text books ready to hand out and I'll have some training aids ready for my big overview presentation. No need to psyc myself out. I've always had a passion for building transmissions and now for teaching. I'm ready.

I will be dressed nicely, Do a meet and greet at the door and introduce myself to each of the students.Once class starts I ask the students where they are from their names and what color is there favorite this helps break the ice so to speak. It also allows other studentes to bond if they have something in common. I also get to hear their names twice. That helps in memorization and pernownciation.I then talk a little about my work expierience and training. Then we cover SOP's and room rools go over the sylabiss and schedule of events during the phase. Before the class lesson is presented I explain why the coarse is so inportant to them.

Hi Steve,
I like to arrive early and make sure the classroom is ready. I list the things that they will need to have every day on one side of the board and what will be covered that day including the numbers of the lab sheets we will work on that day.
I greet the students as they come in. Then after sign-in. I introduce myself, then try to show them through my experiences how the subject will benifit them.
Following this I start the class.

Make asure all t/a are availabel and in good shape. All hand out ready.Schedule writen on board. Flcokie

First of all I like to communicate with all team memebers for the cousre and ask if they might have any questions with the schedule for 15 days. Then I make sure I have all paperwork needed for the class each day. I go over with the class, the schedule for the course, and what is expected of them and the accomplishments they should get from the class.

Indeed class preparation is a very important factor on the first day or any other for that matter. Many factors come into play that should lead into a smooth transition for the first day of class. A few of which are that the students feel that they will and learn, and what they will learn is something of real value to them.

i have all required material out for the class to use i am standing outside my door to greet my new class and welcome to the coures i have my room and lab clean so they can see how it should remain through out the course

Ducks in a row. Good planning etc goes a long way, but sometimes the focus should be on the students first day. Place teasers on the desks before class--Items of interest, magazines, pictures, etc. to get the students asking questions and getting excited before class even starts. This way when you begin going thru the objectives and content of the course it is possible to tie into the things they have seen and how they will learn about them thru the class.

I agree with the things Rich does I also make a flip chart with tke lab exercises on it so they know what is exspected of them and how do get it done.

When I prepare for a new course I make sure I have more material than I need, so that I have a large amount of material to choose from in order to be prepared for any potential questions the new students may present me with

I arrive very early before class and arrange all the things I need to have for the first days activities. My name, the date, the course name and the areas to be covered during the course are laid out on the board. The student books are counted and ready for distribution. I review the roll sheet and run through the list of class participants names so I can try to properly pronounce them. Greeting them at the classroom door is also a good time to make eye contact with these new faces.
