I make sure that I have a lesson plan in order. I go over what we are going to accomplish during the course. I make sure that I have everything wriiten on the white board before class starts. I have an activity plan to break the ice. I make sure that I am dressed in a professional manner.I start the class out with clear expectations and follow through with this plan.

Be over prepared, have all your ducks in a row. Have all your technical aids up and running. All your material printed, and one or to extra books over the roster.
You may get more students then you expect.

Make sure you present your self professional, first impressions stick.

Start the class with a presentation of what’s going to be required of them when the class is over. “The Objective”
Remember most of your new students do not know what the class will go over.

If you use “The Objective” together with a lesson plan, they will know more what to expect. And both the students and you will get more out of the first lesson

Remember that most students are fell lost, and nervous as you are the first lesson.

In planning for a successful first class session there are numerous factors to consider. The class need to be set up for a positive learning environment. This could mean tables and chairs arranged for good teacher and student interactions. Another factor is giving the students an outline or timeline of the daily scheduled topics and activities. This could also involve providing the students with all their training manuals, workbooks, lab task sheets and also a discussion and/or a calendar of how and when the material will be covered and tested on.
As the instructor you should be well prepared technically for the class materials and any discussions that might occur. The lab tasks also need to be prepared and working properly as needed by the class. To initially connect to the class there needs to be some introductions and then some type of lid-opener to help the students get to know each other in the class. Lastly give the students some of the WIIFM (Whats is in this class for me) and build some plans or dreams with the students. Greeting the students as they come to class helps show professionalism and as the instructor you can on the spot clear up most problems or issues before they become a habit for the students and possibly become disruptive to the whole class.

I would review the material again before the meeting to develop any questions. I would then make a list of discussion topics, I would like duscussed at the meeting. I would also test out some of the new material if possible.

Ensure all necessary materials are present, all reference material has been reviewed and the classroom is properly arranged. Review class roster and check smart for indications of special needs. Have the days' sylabus, date and your name on the board.

Hi Lyle,
Like your planning. I know this approach will put in a comfortable position of being ready to meet your students and get them off to a positive start.

Being prepared ahead of time is a key factor in the success of an instructor. Many students are looking for that role model and showing that you are on time and prepared for your class is just one way we can be a good example and a role model. I have to ask my self the question, how do I expect a student to show up on time if I walk into the class room five minutes after the start time and than have to leave the class to get papers or test material. I never thought too much of standing outside the classroom door to greet our students but after listing to the reasoning may find that is something I start doing with my team. To answer your question fully, I would start my class by making sure I have all my paper work in order, make sure I have my power point up and running and lesson plans picked out for the students. I would out line the objectives for the course on the board and date any material dead lines. Without saying I would have made sure I was well prepared on the subject matter I was teaching prior to the class start. Fifteen minutes prior to class start I would make sure that I am an example of professionalism that we require of our students and greet my students by the door.

For a new clas start I would follow these five steps.
1. Have any handouts ready that will be given to the class.
2.Check all equipment that will be used for the presentation to insure it is working properly.
3.Look over objectives for the course and maybe even list them on the board.
4.Review my own notes on the topics I plan on covering the first day.
5.Meet and greet each student as the come into class.

Hi Bill,
Sounds like you have a very good plan for how you start each course phase. I am sure that your students appreciate the effort that you put forth to help them be successful in their career preparation.

make sure classroom is neet and orderly, training aids if needed are in the room, my name plate on board ,list objectives on board to be covered this day, then i greet the class introducing myself

you will need to always reveiw the course material to make sure you will be confident in all aspects of the material. Make sure that the room is clean and you have enough materials to meet all your students needs for success

get the class training aids together and list on the board all 15 days , what will happen each day, shop vs notes , when tests will be given and how and what they are, also all lab requirements based on my phase.get our professionalism sheets ready to pass out.i also have a seating chart ready to begin with as needed. once this is set i will go out in the hall about 10 to 15 minutes before class starts to observe and greet the students.

When teaching a new course, Being prepared is the key, you need to have more material than you will ever use, because you have never taught this coures before you will need to have allot of Material to choose from, after you become more confident teaching this course you can decide what material to keep and what material is not nessasary.

You need to set up a formate to follow with each area you want to cover also you will need to adjust this when requiried time and content.

Make sure you are thourough in your preporation of your subject for the day. Make they understand what is required of them. You are there to see they are successful.

Every first class meeting will be nerve racking. I find by preparing well in advance and doing some mental practice. I imagine greeting the class, doing the introductions, and making the transition to the class material. The class will usually follow your guidance if it flows smooth..

Make sure I have a very percise outline and understanding myself of what I will expect from the students in this course.
They need to know what is expected, and have clear goals and know what they will get out of it

Have a professional development plan, allways start the class on time and be a role model to the students.

Hello All,
How you prepare for the beginning of the class will set the tone for the whole class. So it is extremely important to make sure that you have; all training aids present and in working order, workbooks for the students, the room is neat and clean, the projector is ready and the right power point is available, all computers are up and runing with all the correct material loaded. That is just an example, I have a checklist that I follow to make sure that I get it all done. Then it is very important to meet your students at the door, this helps set up a good raport and lets the students know you care.

I make sure to have all hand out materials copied and organized the day before. I look over the material for any changes such as updates, syllabus, holiday scedule, etc. I also look over the room to see if anything needs to be done (tables, chairs, computers, trash). I also print out student list to make sure I have the needed info(special computer log-in i.d.)and the room is set up properly. I also look for familier names of students I may have had before. The morning of the class, I set out materials on the tables. Double check computers. Once I feel the room is ready I mentally relax into greeting mode for the students.
