Hi Bob,
I know you are going to expand your expertise in these areas as evidenced by your dedication to teaching. Plus, it is a lot of fun to try new and creative things in your classroom. It helps to keep your interest up as well.

Hi Jeremy,
With discussion the students can see how their contributions to the class are being integrated into the learning. This raises their level of engagement as well as their interest.

I've found that discussion is most useful in the sense that it creates active engagement with the material. Students who are talking are awake. I've also found they have better retention and can actively apply the material more effectively.
Hi Jeremy,
In using the discussion and conversation method of teaching you have found it fits your students learning preferences and your personality better. What have been the key things you have found as you have developed this participatory learning method?
Gary
My ability to be more flexible and creative in dissiminating information as well as encouraging diverse methods of information-sharing from the students.
I engage my students in discussion and general conversation. I also use limited lectures and handouts. I find this system to be most effective both for my students and my personality.
The techniques that I use range from demonstrations, jobsite visits, and vendor visits (interior design) to field trips to local firms that employ architects and designers in action.
Hi Julie,
A lot of instructors use a survey to gather the basic information about their students. This helps with the planning of the different delivery methods that will be used throughout the course. It also helps the instructors with remembering the students by being able to connect their responses with students' names.

Hi Amanda,
The sharing of content and then reinforcing it with application is a great teaching technique. The instructor stories show how the content can be used in real world settings and why it is important for them to remember it.

Perhaps utilize a written survey on the first day of class to better "know the students" regarding their academic and life experiences relating to the course material.
Utilize a survey on the first day of class to better "know the students" regarding course-related academic and life experiences.
When I was a student, the classes that I learned and remeber the most in were the classes where the instructors told stories which related to the lesson. It is a great technique that makes even the most complicated lesson much easier to follow.
I do this as well. I enjoy watching other styles and methods of teaching. Observing their personal hands on connection with each students.
I'm in the process of building data base with all resume and cover letter from the students at least 6 weeks before externship so I can assist them better in their search so Externship sites
I also have had an opportunity to see many different teaching styles - but not only with multiple instructors, but with many different schools.
I also have learned a great deal from video tech traning- time is essential - and using it wisely helps determine key objectives and goals for each course.
I do get sidetracked with students ( usually 1 or 2 ) that have no prior exposure to any software or computers and tend to become frustrated easily with whole class demo tutorial learning.
I have found that demo & stating that I will work indidually with each student allows them to focus on the overall concepts and project outcomes.
Laura,
I agree, it is a very difficlut situation to manage especially with the current "entitlement" mentality that exsists. I find that peer pressure has some effective use in this area.
Hi Kevin,
I agree with you. What a great opportunity you have to observe the different styles. The more exposure that one has the wider variety of knowledge one had to chose from in their own style.
Gary
Hi Laura,
These kinds of incentives to be on time are important. The students need to learn that they have to be on time if they are going to be successful in their careers. By having the class operate by the same rules you will be helping the students be successful in the work world.
