Attend seminars and workshops to remain current in my field, and in teaching and learning practices, through appropriate Professional Faculty Development and Professional Development activities.
Thanks, I agree. I have set in on instructor evaluations and have also conducted them. I alway learn from watching other instructors when they are "on-the-spot". Some do a great job without the PPT's and others use the PPT for the outline of the lecture. Both work very well.
I will continue to attend national and local convensions. There are hundreds of booths where you can obtain the latest in technical and didactic information. I also attend the lectures in the latest in both instructional style and the most current techniques in Pulmonary Medicine. Sharing this new information with other intructors always confirmes what I have learned and spreads the knowledge base.

1st I would like to break the ice first with students in coming in early and sitting with the students as if I were one and get to no what is it there looking for within in the program.
2nd Then I would keep enthusiasm explaining what exciting fun throughout the course by having dialoged and debate from students and professor then amongst students only, on each subject we go over.

Fred,
Yes, agreed! My students have been able to teach me sooooo much! Since I adopted the concept that learning happens when I always consider the students perspective; I have been honored to be part of the students obtaining & owning their learning. -Melanie
Self-assessment via student progress, observation by other instructors and even videotaping my own presentation would be my first step. Finding out how to access other teaching materials to reach students with various learning styles can refine and enhance instructional style.
Classroom management is very important given the student population that I have to teach. I believe that learning should be fun so I try to create an environment that is conducive to learning yet not being so stiff!
I have on many ocassions observed other instructors to enhance skills. Most importantly, I teach from the perspective as if I were the student sitting in that seat what my expectations would be. I often look to the students for guidance for their diverse learning styles and adopt best practices to meet the needs of the students.
Be able to adjust to the style of your learners
It is my goal to learn more about the technology the university offers; I plan to implement technology into my teaching. It is my hope that by increasing my technical skills I will have an even greater connection with my students.
I came to the classroom a completely blank slate.
I had over 25 years in my field, taught many of extern technicians as well as DVM externs but no teaching was formal.
When I stood in front of my first class I sweated buckets. I immediately started sitting in on other instructors classrooms and observer how they taught.
They instructors I liked were the ones that involved the students in the lectures. I tried to follow what I liked and that helped me a great deal. I have been teaching for 4 years now and I feel as if my style is a culmination of many.
I also searched on line for techniques. I found power teaching in my search and I thought it was a very fun and student involved method. I use that from time to time.
Question : Is it good to change up your teaching style from time to time ?
Hi Ester,
Good plan for offering variety and engagement to and for your students. This approach will help to keep them focused on the content.

Hi Shauna,
Good strategy for getting and then using student input. This way the students see how you are using the feedback they give you.

I love to do researtch, so I am constantly reading, learning and then incorporating that knew knowledge into my lectures, to ensure that my students are getting the most current information possible about the subjects that I teach. I also encourage my students to participate with their real-world knowledge to augment the theoretical side of learning, because I feel that I often learn more from my students then they learn from me. This also make class time more interesting because students then take responsibility for their learning by applying their prior knowledge of the subject matter from their own expperiences and seeing how this knowledge fits into existing theories and models they may not have been aware of.
Hi James,
Good to hear about what you are already doing to support your students. Keep up the good work. Enjoy sharing your content and impacting the lives of your students.
Gary
I believe to develop, refine, and enhance my instructional style I must invest time in using multi-media formats in my online instruction.
Multi-media provides instruction that supports learning styles that include:
Visual
Auditory
Tactile
and a combination of these.
So, multi-media curriculum would be helpful
for me and my students for instruction (ie. teaching and learning).
I have my students periodically fill out a form listing something they like and something they don't like about the course, which topic they found the most interesting, and any improvements they would like to see. After reviewing those, I make some adjustments and then have them fill out the forms again after 2-4 weeks to see if those changes have been effective.
There are many techniques that will allow me to improve on my instructional style. I enjoyed the lecture about getting to know your students. Although, I already give my students study methods.
Hi Lorraine,
Good points about how to combine the different deliveries into maximum learning opportunities for your students. These different exposure points are critical if students are going to stay engaged and focused.
