Whether we like it or not our students are constantly evaluating us. You can model as much by not doing something as you do by actually doing something. Not reacting to a disruptive student is just as effective as reacting to them. It depends on what message you want to convey. There is nothing wrong with an instructor feeling justifiably angry about something. By dealing with it well an instructor can teach his students a valuable lesson.

Provide them with examples or let them witness examples that might take place in the college. Also, if a student has a problem, let them share the problem and ask for feedback from their peers.

Joyce,
Good for you. This is what being a role model is about. You are demonstrating the standards you have as an educator as well as a person that represents the field the students are preparing to enter.

I am in the classroom 10 - 15 minutes early with all materials ready to be given out. I write the course name, my name, the date, and the agenda for the class on the board. I keep up with new procedures and information to share with the students. I show dedication to and enthusiasm for teaching.

Demonstrating enthusiasm, professional appearance, and command of the content is contagious for learning students.

Students learn from examples, good or bad.

Being professional and still bring fun and laughter into to classsrom setting. Never being inappropriate or negative. Having different age groups stop in and talk about advantages of their chosen career path

To be a good leader you must lead by example! I expect myself to be be on time (20 minutes early), prepared (supplies and attitude)and disciplined (in academics and behavior).

Be on time!
Be prepared!
Be passionate!
Be disciplined!

David,
Thanks for helping to learn some French. The concept is a key one. If we don't have our mis ready then we can't expect our students to have theirs.

Some ways I model behaviors to my students is by being a strong leader and professional at all times. It is extremely important for the students to see their instrucotrs being professional. In being a professional I make sure all the students understand that as an instructor I am not perfect and I will admit to any mistakes I make. This is a learning process for me as well as the students. I express to the studens that it important to keep an open mind and to never stop learning or educating yourself.

I practice what I preach. I have been in the feild of which i'm teaching and often relate life situations that the students may see one day in their prespective fields. my favorite saying is, I may have a small frame, but I have large shoes to fill and that's what i'm preparing you for!!

I believe that it is very important for the instructor to use proper english when addressing a class. I also believe that one should always address students with respect and show how a professional will conduct themselves at all times.

Great idea! I try to do this with my class all the time. I feel it helps set a standard they should follow as well.

As an instructor, I am a role model. I have been in the work force for 30 yrs, so I know what it takes to make it in the job force. I always try to uphold a level of professionalism, but I also have the "soft", human side. I inform students repeatedly to come to my office to talk to me about exam, questions, or anything. I have only been teaching in a formal setting for about 4 months, but have been a trainer for most of my work career. I know there is lots to learn, & i look forward to the challange and to passing 30 yrs of experience and expertise to others, I have a mid-west work ethic which I hope I can instill into my students as well.

yes, i think our students will try to imitate the way we behave & how we conduct ourselves in class, so they will see us as their idols, so we have to behave up to that standard.

I agree as well. I try to model to the students that mistakes do happen, but it is the way that we handle those situations in front of our patients that will determine their response. I try to teach them to remain calm and professional at all times. This will include their mannerisms as well as their verbal responses to situations.

I teach at a culinary school and one of the first terms we teach is Mise En Place which in french translates as: everything in its place. So we teach our students to have their mis in place. They are on time, in complete unifrom, their equipment ready, ingredients ready, recipes on note cards. And the list goes on. But are they ready, are they proffesionals. If we require our students to have their Mise en place ready, then we as Chef Instructors have to have our Mise en place ready each and every day. We are huge role models to our incoming culinary students. Always have your mis ready!!!
