always be on time, be in uniform and have it clean and presentable. come with the attitude that says I want to learn
I have signed contracts which students have to sign explaining required behaviors within the field and the classroom. Guest speakers come in to also reinforce the importance of these behaviors. The key is practice, once the student not only understand the importance of the behaviors but also the reasoning behind them, then follows compliences and routine.
Michael,
Thank you for sharing this example and your comments about being a professional and demonstrating it through dress. It is critical that we model such since we may be the first and sometimes only person in that career area they have met.

One model behavior that one can use to help one's students succeed in their career field would be to dress professionally. In past my working experience, I had to be an interim supervisor while my supervisor was out on maternity leave, and one of the first duties I had was to advise a temp worker on the fact that she was not dressed according to the company dress code. Her blouse was inappropriately low cut and it was difficult advising her in a diplomatic way; however, I attempted to advise her diplomatically. The result of the advising wasn't what I had hoped for though. Instead of her compliying with the company dress policy, she decided never to report back to the company the next day thinking that she was a temp worker anyway, so she could get away with that same behavior someplace else! I would have to say that my diplomatic advising on her professional dress was successful - one way or another! Dress is important, and I have found that many students that I have encountered during my teaching career so far do need to be educated about how to dress professionally. My professional dress as an instructor will definately be a model for them to follow!
As instructors, we must first present ourselves as Professionals. A good place to start would be the way we dress, the way speak; using Professional Language, The way we interact respectfully with others. We as Instructors must also adhere to the institutions rules and regulations while enforcing them fairly and consistently.
Mohammed,
Good strategies for being a role model for your students.

be honest, modest,be punctual, always consistent, focus on syllabus, wear clothes professionally, keep high moral standards, they will behave as how they see the instructor behaves, show students confidence, so they can build theirs based on what they see from the instructor.Always give them an idea how it will look like in practical terms ,which means dont just use theory, apply it.
I try to build their personality as they go along & teaching them my virtues which i believe can install the ingredients of success in them.
Diana,
Simple and yet critical for the students to react to and be aware of as the class progresses.

Dressing professionally, acting professionally, and being approachable but not their "pal".
Makia,
Good strategies. You are setting the standard of conduct and learning high which is important for the students to recognize and follow.

From my own personal experience, I try to display a type of professionalism that will foster positive behavior and engaging atmosphere throughout the entire course.
I always dress appropriately--no jeans, t-shirts, shorts, etc.
I speak clearly and make sure I address each student by their last name. This sets the tone in the classroom.
I try to keep the students' engaged with the assignments by grabbing the student's attention, involving students' interaction, applying 'real life' experiences/skills, and reinforcing the information.
These are only a few examples on how I model behaviors to assist students in their career goals.
I think some of the most important behaviors that will help students is good communication and active listening. Showing students patience and understanding for their point of view is important in the learning process. I also believe positive reinforcement given to students has a huge impact on learning and how they motivate their peers in group activities.
Donna,
I agree. You are the standard that they are going to use to measure professionalism that is within the class.

Be credible, candid, compassionate, committed and clear as an instructor. This will create a positive effective learning enviornment for the students.
I think you set excellent standards for the students. Your preparedness shows them what your expectations are of them.
Basically everything you do and say has some impact on your students. It is important for you as the instructor to present a positive, professional environment for learning.
Critical thinking is important in many fields. Almost all actually. The ability to problem solve and find solutions is what sets an individual apart and defines their skills in the field. In the Information Technology field, critical thinking is a necessity to troubleshoot computer systems and other aspects of the field.
