I feel like having a well prepared syllabus keeps the instructor on track, as well as the students. By giving them a syllabus you are familiar with they know what to expect in class the weeks to come.
A clearly detailed syllabus will reduce time spent in class on what may be considered the usual or typical questions a student may raise regarding a certain subject matter. The syllabus lays out a clear road map to the destination of the course objectives.
Are there different types of syllabi? Are some more commonly used in the United States as opposed to overseas?
Julie,
A clear and concise syllabus is a time saver and reduces frustration and anxiety in students. You make a good point about how the students need to read and understand the contents of the syllabus so they will know the polices, expectations and requirements of the course.

Having a well prepared syllabus will let the student know exactly what is expected of them from the very first class. There should be little
question after the syllabus has been read.
I think that it is important to have a well prepared syllabus because this is the roadmap to the course. It needs to be well developed in order for the students as well as the teacher to stay on track on what is to be covered in the classroom.
Deborah,
Good point about the syllabus. It is the guide for the course and the students will be following it. It needs to be clear and concise if it is to serve the purpose for which it was written.

I apreciate a well prepared syllabus because it allows the Instructor as well as the student to follow and know exactly what is expected from them at home when doing homework as well as knowing what class activitiesthat would take place that day. It allows the students to also prepare for the next day lecture well in advance.
A well prepared syllabus will help guide your class and yourself. This keeps the entire team on the same page. Also, allows students to know what they can expect from the class and when everything is due.
Karen,
Well said in terms of describing the value of the syllabus to both the students and the instructor. It is the foundation upon which the course develops and helps students to move toward their career goals.

David,
It is one of the most important documents you will hand out to students. They need to see the value of it and consult it as they move through the course.

Zachary,
Right you are. The syllabus is the road map leading to course success. It keeps everyone on the same page and moving the right direction.

The syllabus is a contract between the student and the professor. It's the students responsibility to read and understand all the material on each syllabus. The syllabus is the blueprint for the course expectations, requirements, ground rules, readings, assignments, exams, and final projects.
A well prepared syllabus will give the students the accurate information of what will be covered during the course. It will create expectations of what the course will be like so that they have an idea of the work that is going to take place during the course.
It is important to have a well-prepared syllabus because students will utilized it both prior to and during the course of the class to know what is expected of them.
Sharon,
You are right about the need for a well prepared syllabus. The use of a signature sheet is a a good way to hold the students accountable for having read the contents of the syllabus. The signature sheet emphasizes the importance you attach to the syllabus and sends a message that they should consider it as being important as well.

Jennifer,
Good point. When students are confused they become anxious and frustrated which leads to all kinds of problems in the classroom. A well prepared clear and concise syllabus keeps everyone on the same page and focused in terms of the goals of the course.

A well prepared, detailed, comprehensive syllabus is the best tool you can give your students to help them be successful in your class. It is a road map to guide them on their journey through the class, the bench mark to show them specifically what and how much, and the quality control check list in stating policies, grading, and other guidelines. Having a page where the student can sign that they have read and understand the information is a great way to reiterate personal accountability and underscores the value and importance of the syllabus.
IT IS VERY GOOD BECAUSE THE DAY BY DAY CURRICULUM IS IMPORTANT TO BE ON POINT. iF YOU THE INSTRUCTOR IS OFF THE STUDENTS WILL BE CONFUSED AND WILL NOT FOLLOW YOUR LESSON PLAN
Maria,
Good plan for you and your students to follow. This way everyone will know when they reach the end of the course journey.
