The learning environment is a major impact on instruction. Students need an environment that is comfortable, clean, and conducive to learning. Distractions should be minimized, and all appropriate efforts should be made to maximize the students learning by proper lighting, seating, space, and supplies being made available to assist student learning. Additionally, if the learning environment is disruptive, then removing the disruptions before attempting to present materials is something that should also be addressed. Preparation, presentation, and learing from unspoken cues can assist the instructor to create a learning environment that facilitates the learning process, motivates for further learning, and reinforces professionalism and competency thoughout the learning process.
it is important for the students to be comfortable so that they will want to learn and not think about the fact that there not comfortable.
Hands on experince so imprtant for the learning process.Clinical rotation wil lsupply this to the student
Safe learning is so important. Student have enough t oworking about and focus on they should not have ot worry about the learning enviroment
It plays an important peripheral role in that it will either distract the student or enhance the student's learning by quietly becoming the perfect canvass on which the student and instructor interact in the most efficient and productive means possible.
My students have to feel safe and comfortable in the learning environment in order for productive and successful learning to occur. It is part of my job to offer the safest environment conducive to learning.
The opportunity for our students to participate in clinical rotations in a variety of physical therapy settings is an excellent learning environment to apply information learned in class and lab.
Hi Cynthia,
This shadowing experience is a great way to make it "real" for the students. They get to see what work is really like plus they get to see it in their own school building. A quick but efficient way to reinforce the content that you are sharing with your students. Good job.
Gary
I completely agree the more realistic the better, i teach a business office procedures class and one of the things I do each quarter is have the students one at a time job shadow the AA at the front desk. They really get to ask her lots of questions, she shows them the office equipment, outlook and many other things. I can't think of any student who has not enjoyed this time and knowledge.
If the environment is not correct then the focus is not on the learning, it is on whatever is wrong with the enviroment, for example if the room is to hot or cold that is what the student is focused on and your topic is second or taking a backseat to their comfort.
Every aspect of the environment plays a role on an effective learning environment. These are just a few items to check:
Comfort: Is the room to hot or to cold? Are the seating arrangements comfortable for student learning?
Hearing: Are there distracting noises that take away from the presentation.
Vision: Is there enough lighting and can the students’ see the visual aids.
I know for me the learning environment is crucial to the concentration and success of my students. I teach at a culinary school and if the sinks are constantly backed up, the air conditioning does not work, and the ovens don't cook properly it can drastically affect the outcome of my day and that of my students as well.
They don't want to deal with those issues. They want to learn how to cook in an environment where every thing works properly. If these things happen it hinders the learning process because it distracts from the days lesson plan and the proper way of doing things.

The environment is so important in enabling my students to feel that they are in a space that they feel comfortable to share ideas. I teach in two different classrooms and one is open, well lit and has a large space for us to move. The atmosphere is welcoming. The other, is small, closed off and feels overwhelming. The mood of the class tends to relect the room.
It can enhance or hinder the process. I recently was able to tour a new pharmacy school in our area, the difference of what they offer in thier classroom set up can make the difference of students being prepared for the working environment. They had actual labs set up for different parts of the course. Currently on our campus, our students learn from text books, computer programs, and some tools of the field. Instructors are limited to what they are provided by the campus as to the environment.
It plays an important role in how the material is delivered.
The learning environment plays an important part of the instructional process. It allows for students to feel confortable enough to speak up in class as well as it allows for the classmates to interact with one another in a productive manner.
Just think about how you feel when you are not in the appropiate environment. The same apply for the students, so I agree with you
Hi Mildred,
Right you are about all of the planning that needs to be done prior to the class starting. By having the planning done the instructor can concentrate on the students and their learning needs.
Gary
Hi Tanner,
Good points. Variety in instructional delivery and lecture really helps to keep students engaged and focused on the content just as you said.
Gary
The learning environment is crucial when attempting to instruct adult learners of various ages. Having the audiovisual equipment functioning properly, making copies of handouts in the classroom, posting the agenda, etc., cuts down on distractions. The key is the plan early and get to class before your students. This gives us time to perform a walk-thru and go over the checklist for the course.
