Hi Gary,
Good strategies for class management. I am with you all the way on cell phones. The students have a lot of material to digest so the more we can reduce distractions the more engaged they will be in the learning process.
Gary
I want my learning environment to be quiet without others talking during lecture, texting or on their cell phone (I do not allow cell phones out during class). Lighting good. I ask students questions to try to keep them involved and to just get them to think and figure something out.
the classroom should be clean, and all students should be able to have a clear view of the instructor and and audio visual equipment. this makes the student feel more relaxed and attentive to the instructor.
I also agree with you. The more we can pass along of actual experiences the better off the student will be when they actually enter the workforce. One issue that I always recall my instructors saying through my accounting courses was not to talk to our auditor's unless you have too. After working in the field for the past several years I’ve found that they are a valuable resource if I have questions and it makes the audit process that much easier because they already are aware of complex problems and the resolution we implemented before they begin their audit. It really saves me a lot of time and saves my employer audit fees.
The learning enviroment has to be well equiped and suitable for demos and production. It needs to be comfortable for the student to ask questions and for my self to walk around and offer individual help.If the enviorment is unsuitable learning will suffer.
lets the student understand what its going to be like after they are finished with their education.
Many of my students are learning online for various reasons that require flexibility; work, kids, etc. Compassion and appropriate flexibility on my part comes with the territory. I’ve learned that, especially in the online environment, working with students to reach their educational goals is as much a service to them as the pure schooling. Having compassion while maintaining order and fairness is a fine line, if managed appropriately, it can build rapport and earn respect from students.
The online classroom can be a scary place for students who are unfamiliar with the environment. To help create a safe and a comfortable learning environment an instructor has to be highly visible to guide instruction during asynchronous and obviously synchronous discussions. Online instructors cannot dominate the direction of a lesson by lecturing. Therefore, they must establish a presence in discussions to help guide and build an open and productive learning atmosphere.
Other strategies I like to use to be more visible in my classrooms is to post comments in a timely fashion to the shared discussion forums to let students know that you are reading their messages and send messages in the form of email to all participants.
Keeping the students attention and motivating them to attend class.
It should be a comfortable place for students. If in a lab, then it should be equiped properly before the students come to the lab. This will allow them to focus.
The learning environment should offer students intellectual and practical opportunities to gain the knowledge and skill set that can be applicable. Real life scenarios, challenges, outcomes, and opportunities should be well balanced to offer the maximum comprehension of information and experience that is being learned.
The learning environment role in the instructional process provide the atomoshere for learning. The lights, room temperature and the color of the room all provide the teacher and student an environment for learning. It set the tone for learning, it keep you focus.
The learning environment is vital for learning. For example, when nursing skills are taught we utilize our lab. It is set up with real hospital beds, bedside tables, over the bed tables and mannequins. The students would not be able to learn these skills in the classroom, they have to be in the environment that fosters that type of learning.
I teach medical assisting, and I try to create a clinic "feel" in the classroom as much as possible. This way it is not so foriegn when they enter into the back portion of a live clinic.
Hi Doug,
Good way to approach the learning development of your students. The more "real world" experiences you can give them the better you are going to prepare them to make the transition from school to employment. In addition you will help them to develop their understanding of the ethics of their field.
Gary
I have to quickly adapt my teaching style when I see students lagging in their participation. Somedays they are very involved and then on Mondays at 8 am I have to be much more creative and engaging.
Hello Dr. Gary,
The learning environment plays an important role in the instructional process. I have found that many times students will read material in the text, and come to class confused, or not understanding various concepts and/or models. The classroom can play a vital role in learning for the student because of the ability to bounce different ideas off of the instructor and various students within the classroom. There are many times that students come of with some great examples to share that relate to the confused concept/idea that a student might be struggling with. Adult learning want to know how the material within the textbook applies to them and how they can relate it to the "real world" that they are exposed to every single day.
In my classes I emphasis "real life examples, case studies and active student involvement" to maximize the learning environment. It seems to work very well.
Thanks,
Doug
The learning environment sets the stage so that learning can occur. Optimal learning environments make it possible for students to receive the best possible foundation to build on as they learn and/or develop their skills.
The learning environment is a pivotal aspect of the instructional process. If the student does not feel comfortable or if they do not see the classroom as a competent and professional area, they will "not care" if they are not at their best. After all, the student will be spending time out of their day in this place to learn and not "dilly dally".
A prepared instructor and a ready classroom will not only create a welcome and engaging place for the student, but will also only bode well for the instructor because future students will know that this particular instructor knows what they are talking about. These students will also feel cared about in that there is a place that they are able to learn and be exposed to professionalism.
I agree strongly on this. It is import to explain then show and then let them do it. I do think class room should be different the real world environment because this distracts them during lectors. That is what labs are for.
