I feel that the room used to lecture and prepare activities is not an optimal learning enviornment. For example, to present a power point presentation, the lights are not set up to dim. This presents a problem for student who want to take notes on the presentation. What are some suggestions as to how to approach administration on making changes in the physical classroom? I feel my suggestions are ignored but it may be how I present these suggestions. I don't want to give up on this because I feel improvements could be made.
I agree and that is the balancing game you must employ to ensure your student's get the most out of their education.
The learning environment plays a significant role as with many non-traditional students their learning may not be conducive to a traditional environment and unlike conventional college students, major of their learning probably occurs in the classroom. Developing a supportive and flexible classroom and teaching styles makes the learning objective more attainable for students motivation and learning.
The learning enviornment is critical in the instructional process. A student must be comfortable and rid of distractions to have a successful learning experience.
One simple example of the environment's reflection in teaching style: instead of having all student tables facing forward, I have them angling toward the center of the classroom. Not only does this put me directly in front of most of their eyes, they can also see other students in the classroom, and are more likely to engage in discussion with another student when they bring up a topic of interest.
The learning environment sets the tone for the mental state of the students. If the environment is relatively free from distractions, this is best. It's also important to have the proper equipment necessary for learning activities close at hand.
I often find it helpful to take walks during lectures, as this sets up the mind to be present.
The learning environment is very important. We have a problem with stablizing the temperature of the room. It is either too hot or too cold. The students come wearing layers of clothing, but the instructors can tell when they start to get restless due to temperature changes.
In the learning environment, students' success is all that matters. In the instructional process, professors are not in classrooms to show all they know but rather to TEACH all they know according to individual needs e.g. students who are visual learners and need extensive boardwork to process information vs. lecture.
The proper learning environment is essential to promote a space that is conducive to learning. The space should be clean and clutter free, brightly lit, and quiet.
The learning environment must be one in which all students are respected, and I think that the instructor needs to be conscious of that when designing course materials as well as setting the standard for how students respect each others' views.
This is critical when you are conducting lab classes. The Instructional value can be greatly hampered if and when you are missing equipment or something does not work. This will start a trickle down affect that will get in the way of your teachings.
The learning environment is essential. If the lighting is too dim or too bright it is detrimental to good study time. If the room is too cold or too warm I can lose their attention because they are either shivering or sweating!
William,
Good to hear about how you are "reading" your students and identifying strategies that are working for you. This is what makes teaching fun for everyone.

The learning environment is very important. Having a comfortable learning enviroment with the proper temperature, adequate supplies and necessary learning materials is essential for success in learning.
i agree 100% when they come together as a team, they work together much better and good things start to happen
It is important to keep the students focus on the material being taught. If the students are uncomfortable in the class, their focus may veer away from the material. So I try to keep the class environment a comfortable temperature and close the door so that outside noises are kept to a minimum.
I agree. If the student is not comfortable about his surroundings, his performance will not be positive. As I am in a clinical ultrasound lab setting, it becomes crucial for me to maintain a safe, private and dignified environment. Students scan each other to gain practical experience. With a mix of male/female students and of multiple ethnicity, age and backgrounds, I have to be extra sensitive. Its a challenge with each batch of new students. But so far have managed, and the students have cooperated well because they know it is in their best interest to work together with each other.
I'm new at this but from my experience from teaching so far is not only that the students feel comfortable but to make them feel that they are accepted and a part of the class. When I have been able to connect with the students I have seen learning barriers fall and huge humps in my program overcome.
Aisha,
Good point and the reason to establish a learning environment that is supportive and comfortable. This way the students will be able to learn and grow while making progress toward their career goals.
