I belive it is really important to have clear small goals for the students to complete on thier way to the large goal. The smaller goals help to build confidence as they see themselves progressing towards the big picture.
I haven't taught real school before only Religious Ed. By having these definitions, I'll have a better time teaching adults.
Students tend to work better with proper rubrics and as long as they have clear understanding on what is expected from them, instructors can be flexible when they notice that most students are not accomplishing goals properly.
If you do not have clear goals and objectives the course will not go as smoothly. You feel more organized and can facilitate learning.
Goals are the foundation of a well learning environment and are accomplish only through the instructor objectives. If the goals are not organized to meet the objectives then the learning environment has not been accomplished.
Nashon,
So true. If you don't have clear goals and objectives then neither the students nor you will know where you and they are going.

It is important to have clear goal and objectives for your course because it shows students what you expect of them and how they are going to meet those expectations
Eric,
Thank you for this great example of the value of clear goals and objectives. The real value of the exercise was burned into the minds of each soldier the second day and I am sure never forgotten. This is so true for educators as well.

It is important for me, so that I have a clear outline of what must be covered & taught each class period. If the instructor flounders, the class flounders. (I do remember being a student.)
This is an easy one. I would like to use a story of when I served in the US Army. While on an early morning run (the ones the Army so loves.) Our Company commander tasked us to run at an intermediate pace for an unknown distance. We ran for what seemed to be miles. Not knowing the distance or the end point it quickly turned into a race of stragglers, dropping out of the run at every step. It was quite unsuccessful, or so It seemed at that time. A day later we were tasked with a different goal. This time we were to run at a break neck pace for 3 miles. We were times and told the exact distance from start to finish. That day even though we were running at close to 7 minute miles pace everyone made it in. At the end of that run, the commander told us that we had gone the same distance as the day before. This was a huge surprise as it seemed much shorter, and the pass was much faster. However, on the second day we were running to a goal! There was an end point and a place to achieve. This is just a simple story, and I am sure that a lot of officers were taught this same lesson while in school. Even at this point in my life, when I was very young (And in great shape I might add) I knew with the lesson was and why it was done. Goals are important, they give you something to work for. An achievement and end point and a story.

When you have clear goals and objectives, it allows you to understand the message that you are trying to relay to your students. It helps in the preparation and planning of your class and lecture time. It ensures that you are covering the topics thoroughly and efficiently. The students benefit from a clear and concise plan. They are able to better understand what will be expected from the course and what they are supposed to understand from the course.
TC, I agree that by putting the students in a relaxed and comfortable state, learning is more likely to occur
Clear goals and objective benefit both the student and the instructor by setting a clear and concise framework for the achievement of the course learning objectives. Clear goals and objectives benefit the instructor by giving a specific roadmap how to achieve the course goals and benefit the student by setting clear and measurable expectations of learning.
It is important to have clear goals and objectives of the course so the students can have a better understanding of the course and the material being taught, and also to help the instuctor to guide the students with what it's expected from the students in regard to the learning matetrial. By using goals and objectives, the student can focus in what it is importnat from each lecture or chapter being cover by the instructor.
It is important to have a clear goal and objective in order to limit the possibility of confusion and ambiguity throughout the course. If the student is clear about the objective, they will achieve the goals of the course.
I agree I like to attach the objectives to my weekly lesson plan. It gives the studends a sense of motivation when they also see that I've taken the objectives directly from the text for that subject.I like for everything to match up so that there's no ambiguity between my students and I.
Dr. Fabian,
So true. Without clear goals and objectives there is no direction to the instructional process.

Clear goals and objectives are the cornerstones of a class. They define the fundamental principles that serve as the guiding lights of the class. Without spelling out clear goals, there will be confusion and frustration that can be very disastrous for everyone

Having clear learning goals and objectives are critical to ensure the course material and instruction are aligned correctly with the program outcomes.
