The combination of a good 1st impression, beeing prepared, organized, good attitude will help the students to feel more confident about the learning experience they will have.

Rabih,
It certainly will. This is so important as you work to establish rapport with the students.

Positive first impression will estiblish respect and set the tone for a profissional setting

As a student I found that I always gravitated to the person with the most experience and knowledge
that had a approachable personality and really cared about sharing that knowledge and experience.
In teaching, I try to emulate that. I share many personal experiences about the subject at hand. I find that being open, honest and real about the subject makes my students believe in me from day one. I always tell them there are no silly questions and that we will always find the answers. I tell them they are spending a large sum of money for school and that I will always give them their dollars worth. I follow many of the procedures outlined in this course. and they have served me well

Alan,
Your last sentence sums up a positive first class impression very well. This is what we should be doing during the first class meeting because then we can build on this impression as the class progresses.

Dr. Kevin,
Thank you for this insight about the first day impressions that students form. As you say by having positive first impressions students then look forward to upcoming classes. Their motivation increases as a result of what is said and done the first day.

Susan,
You are so right about setting the tone and environment for the class during the first meeting. How this is done determines how the next few classes are going to proceed in terms of student engagement.

Batrice,
Yes you do. It is much easier as we all know to build on a positive first day rather than trying to dig out of a negative first one.

Who would want to be in a class every day where the instructor was sour or unapproachable? You want yourself and your classroom to be a positive place to be. That doesn't mean that your still do not have a job to do. Discipline is still a very important. You can give a positive impression, do your job when discipline is needed, the students still enjoy coming to your class, and not be a tyrant about it!

I believe that making a positive first impression is important because it sets up a good learning environment when the student has respect for the instructor and vice versa.

positive first impressions are very important, your first impression and professionalism is the key to the door of your success, when students see the positive impression and your behavior,it will increace the confidence in your students, its the foundation of trust, this very important!if you dont have this trust foundation built at the begining of your first impression meeting, you have lost them for good, this means they will not listen in class, its like losing a sale when you are selling a merchndise to new people.

A first impression sets the tone for the rest of the class. As such, it is best for it to be a positive one. Students enter a new class with a number of anxieties and the first class/impression is a great opportunity to dispel as many of those as possible so that they are more receptive to the information that is being shared. Moreover, many students decide whether or not they’ll like a class based on the first meeting/impression they have of the instructor.

couldnt agree more with you on what the students see- they will follow. If the first impression on your part is lacking- for sure you will get this in return from your students. Impartiality is huge as well. You have to know where your boundaries are with your students as well. Clear expectations in the beginning will guide the rest of the class course in everyone's favor.

First impressions are very important because it sets the tone for the entire class period. You want to get it right from day 1.

First impressions are the most rememorable, your students want forget it, so make it good.

Alex,
This is a good point. The students need to have a role model in their instructor that reflects the standard of the field.

I believe that a positive first impression for the teacher is important when starting a new class because you are the model that they will mimic. Thus, you need to give them good habits to mimic.

Kristin,
So true and time is so important in teaching. We need to make sure we make a positive first impression and then we can build from there.

Allison,
So sorry you had to go through something like this but I am excited to read how it turned out. I complement you for your efforts to salvage a class left adrift. You have reinforced the need for the human factor as an educator and how it can bring back students from failure to success.
