lectures

I tend to do lectures visually, but also give them a hand out with some of the lecture information on it. The lecture info that is not on it they have to fill in through the lecture. They tend to follow more thoroughly, not too much writing where they cannot learn while they write, and also they are doing somehting so no sleepiness.

Hi Heidi,
Good way to tailor your instruction to the needs and dynamics of your respective courses. I know you are keeping your students focused with your efforts.

I use this method also. I have found it helpful to have them fill in blanks on some definitions since I cover a lot of material fairly quickly. I have found that overheads are a good way to keep them awake since it seems that for some classes powerpoints lull them to sleep. For my elective classes I use powerpoints since most students are there because they want to be. I would use just a whiteboard but my handwriting is not the best.

I'm a new instructor. I would prefer to use lecture with student participation.

Hi Scott,
You are right about the outline only being a tool. The information we share with our students is only as good as the use they make of it. We need to provide all of the instructional supports we can to encourage them to stay focused and in a learning mode. If they decide not to take advantage of the resources it is their decision.

I do the same thing with lecture delivery. I hand out an outline that goes in line with the text and our in class discussion. Much of the note taking can then be done outside of class, perferably while they read the text. The outline is still a tool, one which will only be useful if the student chooses to use it.

I like to have lecture time very well planned where there are bullet points to cue me on material which is briefly gone through, questions time and followed with handed out information for the student to go over in more depth on their time.....then reviewed quickly the following day

Hi Holly,
Good plan. I like to use structured outlines as note taking guides when lecturing. I have found that they help to guide the students in terms of what is important but with the guided notes they don't have to write everything down giving them a chance to "soak" up the content.
