Offering Varied Instructional Delivery

Why is it important to offer a variety of instructional delivery methods in classes?

Since I teach in 5 hour blocks, it is very important to vary the delivery method of content to keep students engaged and interested for such a long period of time. I have a tendency to flip back and forth between lecture and hands-on lab components with demonstration and practice.

This module has reminded me of the importance of varying my lecture delivery methods as well as shorten those components into more "digestible" portions to help students retain the information. I hope to work in more case study based learning and using the case study to direct the learning rather than teaching then using a case to reinforce the content. Essentially, start with the problem and work to the solution rather than teach the solutions and then work a problem. Perhaps reversing the process will help my students become more creative in their solutions rather than reiterating what I have taught them.

It is important to offer a variety of instructional delivery methods in the class so both students and instructor do not get bored. It is a way to keep the students engaged in the learning process. In my class I do mini lectures, class activities, videos, and group activities. This way it keeps the students attention.

I agree, varied instructional delivery helps to reach everyone and keep them engaged, I vary from powerpoint to notes on the board, diagrams and debates (two big groups) or group work with smaller groups

I use various teaching methods in my classroom. I bring in outside resources for them to review. I like to use visuals for examples and hands on in order to reach as many students as possible.

My greatest fear as an instructor is to be BORING and predictable. Some times I am; wish I had some theatrical sense.

The challenge, for me, is to make the time to explore innovative and effective ways to get dry material across to such a wide variety of students' learning styles.

IRIS,
Students like change of pace and variety in their instructional delivery and you are offering that with your approach. Keep up the good work!

Offering a variety of instructional delivery methods will provide each student with the ability to learn how they are most comfortable and where they have the chance to absorb the information and bring it to a reality. Thus creating confidence with practicing skills and techniques.

I present a short video clip at the beginning to generate curiosity, raise questions, and create a classroom climate of discovery. Then lead students to the answers as they employ the tools and knowledge they gain in the class.

It is important to offer a variety of instructional delivery methods in classes because, by offering a variety of methods allow the students the opportunities to receive the material in a way that best suits them. In addition, variety helps to keep the class interesting and the students focused.

So that students stay interested in the material you are teaching and don't get bored or distracted in your class.

It is very important to offer a number of teaching methods to keep students engaged. In my class setting we explore the objectives through role playing, round table discussions, skits, powerpoints, debates, articles, and current events.Students are never bored, because I keep them active throughout the class period.

I teach a 3-hour class, so in addition to accommodating different learning styles it is also important to keep students engaged and attentive by offering a range of activities that involve listening, writing, discussing, working in silence, working with music, in groups, alone, as a class...and so on. The lesson plan is my way of structuring not only content but also delivery, with continuing engagement as an outcome.

Students in the same class have varied abilities and ways of learning. Presenting lessons and materials in variety of ways will be able to help each student learn. It will also help keep the students motivated and interested in what is being taught.

People have different learning styles, so, its often necesary to offer different delivery methods.

a)your addressing the different learning styles of your students,

b)your offering a method of reenformcemnt

and

c) your creating a more dynamic enviroment

By varying your delivery method you are making the content more appealing to the students. This also promotes more engagement. As different delivery methods are incorporated you will find different students participating.

Alexis,
Great strategy to follow. Students like change of pace and variety in their instructional delivery and you are offering this via your methods. I am sure your students appreciate this approach and as a result their engaged level is much higher.

Students may be auditory, visual or tactile learners. I split up the sections of the class into different styles of teaching through power points, video clips, note taking and group activities for students.

Alicia,
As you know each student has his or her learning preference and you are reading that through your observations. By taking this reading you then can adjust your delivery to appeal to the different learning preferences in the class and keep your students engaged.
