every class have different learning styles, students can't all learn with the same way, so we should change the activities from listening, watching and reading , and hands on activities , discussions ..... to meet the needs of almost all of the students .
I think it is important because all students learn on a different scale and if you only deliver one way you may be missing some of the students not understanding the material.
Every student learns at a different level, the more you can change up your style the better chance you have to hit more students.
Vincent,
Thanks for sharing this strategy with us because it is a good way to increase student interest and engagement.

After a section of lecturing, it can be helpful to show excerpts of film or TV documentaries that illustrate or expand upon the concepts presented in the lecture.

It is important to offer a variety of instructionsl delivery methods in classes because you have a variety of individuals listening to you. They come from all walks of life, are all ages, they have different backgrounds, and different brains!
Nicole,
The more variety we offer our students in terms of instructional acquirement the better for the reasons you list. The more senses used and strategies employed by students the more information will be stored in their working memories for easier retrieval when needed.

Remembering that people learn by trial and error, observation, and doing are important. Web designers may learn by troubleshooting. Graphic designers may learn by watching a demonstration on how to layout artwork and typography. video production artists may learn by completing projects in the environment. As instructors, we must afford students several opportunities to learn.
Nicole,
So true and so important. Students like change of pace and variety in their instructional delivery so the more we can offer both the more engagement we will have.

It is important to offer a variety of instructional delivery methods in classes because each student learns differently. Learning styles (written word, auditory, visualization, and tactile) and ways (trial and error, observation, and doing) vary with each student. The instructor and students can have more fruitful discussions and engagement by varying instructional methods.
Shawn,
This is so important because students like change of pace and variety in their instructional delivery. You are doing such so you are appealing to the different learning preferences in your classes and the result will be more engaged students.

Different people learn in different ways. Establishing a healthy arsenal of delivery mannerisms allows us to effectively and actively engage our students in the material covered. It provideds multiple styles of learning. Though most of us have a primary learning style we still learn from the various other styles. Keeping the attention of the students is just as important as the material being presented.
Each person learns a little differently. Even if one is visual and likes pictures, charts, and graphs, some are visual reading and prefer taking excellent notes they can review later. Yet others don't "get it" until they've actually done it. Since I teach basic college math to welding inspector students, I not only try to accommodate the different learning styles, I also try to show more than one way to solve the problems. For example, when I teach percentage problems to my students, some prefer using the algebraic equation method to set them up and then solve them, some prefer using a proportion, and others prefer using the "percent triangle" to solve percent problems. So if my students don't "get it" one way, I try to find a better way for them to do so.
John,
Do some searching around on the internet. Places I go for new ideas and strategies are elementary school websites, of which there are many many. Take the ideas you get from these sites and translate them into age appropriate levels of instruction and you will have expanded your delivery options. One thing to keep in mind is that adults are just taller children. My students like to play games like Jeopardy for review prior to tests, do group competitions, etc. so this is why elementary websites are so good. Elementary teachers are so creative at coming up with ways to keeps students engaged and focused on the learning process.

What are some ways that you learn about different instructional methods?
It is important because students get bored easily. In our age of smartphones and the internet, our students want to be pulled in quick and want to be entertained while being informed. Switching things up also keeps the instructor fresh.
Different people learn at different pace, and through different methods, therefore you have to cater to the needs of the entire class not just some
Also, powerpoints (and the like) can be great review material, or even "assigned" from them to review so you have a common "understanding" of the material; then when a specific question comes up, you'll have "back" to head for to keep every in context.
Rodney,
This is a challenge for instructors in many different field that require foundational knowledge in order to be able to move to the hands on area of their career. The more examples you can give how this content will be used the more they will understand why they have to learn so much about the human body in order to be able to provide massage therapy in a way that is beneficial to clients.

I work in massage therapy and I find that we rely heavily on tactile/kinesthetic learning. Because of the nature of our field as much as the students and instructors we attract to our field are usually best at learning in this way. Our students will many times struggle through many of the first classes they take that are more audio/visual heavy in the beginning because of this. For this reason we try to apply as much kinesthetic learning as we can even into the classes that would be traditionally taught more from a lecture style; however, we can never get to the more "fun" hands on stuff without first explaining what we do and why many times from an audio/visual standpoint first or in some classes even while using demos and hands on learning.
