I try to include current events into all my learning content. So they can understand how the concepts in the book relate to real life. I have them research newspapers and magazine article on business topics and present the key summaries to the group.
Traci,
Great to hear about the help the module was to you. Keep talking to other instructors and looking for ways to offer this information to your students. Seek their feedback as well. I have found that my students come up with some very clever ideas on how to learn technical information like that you are teaching.

Dr. Gary Meers
Teaching by showing what youhave lectured on is the best way to prepare a student for the workworld. we must demonstrate as much as possible
I try to incorporate all the different tools: Lecture, demo, reading, discussion, and practice for the students.
I like to expand from what materials are given and relate to my real world experiences
I am very new at this. I am currently teaching a course that is difficult all new products to them. Pharmacology. I am constantly trying to find new ways to help them remember. I try to remember how I learned, and then help them to learn the importance of the medication and how to make it sink in. I seek other instructors for advice to find little tricks to help them. Some courses for sure are harder to teach. We have to find ways to help them learn. This module was very helpful to me.
I have been using real world experience theory with hands on application to help bring the relevant points to light in my lectures
I use lecture notes and also web based photos and text. Also part of the class is hands on laboratory work so that ties into it.
I teach in a laboratory setting so half of the day is done in lecture and overheads and the 2nd half is hands on.
continuing education. I believe that if you stay current in the field, then you can really provide your students with up to date relevant course information
I always try that my students learning everything that they going to need for their future about the class
I plan my instruction to accomodate the different learning preferences by setting time for short lectures to be followed by mini exercises in workbooks or texts or I assign small group critical thinking exercises.
Kimberly,
Good balance to how you are sharing content with your students. Students as you know need change of pace and variety in the delivery format which helps them to reset their minds in terms of learning opportunities.
Gary
I generally lecture to explain the big picture and to explain why we perform tests or procedures and to explain the general science. From there I explain the procedure or test. After I verbally go through the process, I demonstrate. While demonstrating I once again explain why we are doing what we are doing.
I feel this process engages the students and initiates questions. I find small groups work best for the students and they are less intimidated in the smaller groups.
James,
Good way to make the content relevant to the lives of the students. This increases the ROI for the students as they work through the course.
Gary
It is difficult to determine what learning styles will work in the first few classes. I attempt to get the student to use as many of their senses as possible for these presentations. I will also ask random persons questions regarding the topic to see if they are getting it and to challenge them. As I identify the predominate learning styles in the group I will gravitate to the more common styles and allow my more advanced students to work with their neighbor to help them along.
I think that the key is to watch the class response to the material being presented and adjust the style used to the situation at the moment. Be flexible! Adjust as necessary.
In presenting the material which is mostly technical and very demanding, I will add examples of something that can easily be related to as well as where it is used in a practical environment.
Many times the content can be dry and somewhat confusing but the examples serve as a bridge between something that has been experienced in life and the new concepts that they are struggling to learn. An example that works for one student may not work for another, but if you can identify something that the student has experienced and relate it to the concept, almost always the lights come on and a coment of now I get it is heard.
I also have to agree. To be able to discuss textbook information, and then be able to apply it in a tactile way, it really gets the information through to the students.
