First I give them a computer survey to complete which tells me what their learning style is and how they will get the most from the course. Next I put together students with the same learning style and have them work on a project that utilizes that style. I may have tactile students prepare a PowerPoint presentation for me to give while my audio students listen to me lecture. As long as it isn't too distracting it works well.

I discuss my own experiences as they relate to course content. I also ask the students to give examples of how the course content has or does affect their lives. For example in my Legal Environment course I discuss how the law of leasing has had an impact on their ability to rent an apartment.I have also brought in guest speakers who are experts in the field and have actual experiences with what is being taught.

Power points, note's, audio and visual aides, hands on learning

I like to include visual techniques into my lesson plan. Such as, youtube or other related sites and then follow up with lecture. This allows for the main points to be repeated and also allows the students to provide feedback on the topic covered.

When implementing relevant Course Content, I like
to tell the students why it is relevent to them.
I don't want the time, energy and planning to be a waste. I want to make sure the content is
appropriate to the student's level. To keep
them motivated I have introdution and training sessions and I make sure the students know I am
there to help give support. I like to give the
students ownership by encouraging them to use and enter their own information and to give feed back.

Well I teach medical billing and coding and it is very hard to implemetn different learning styles our filed is based on guidelines

you have to accomodate as many students as possible..all differnt styles need to have a common denominator!

Jack,
Students, as you know really like hearing stories about their instructors' experiences. Helps to bring relevancy to what they are studying. Good point.

I rely on the job experience related to my field, it helps the students trust in what I say, hence a better learning attentiveness.

Brenna,

I think smaller chunks always work better. Since we all have a set amount of time for a class, the more we can break things down helps the students to stay focused for the whole class session.

Frances

Teresa,

I think real world examples are something that a student can "latch" onto very nicely. I also use real word examples when I teach how to use certain features of the software programs that are included in the course I teach. That makes what we are learning to do seem a little more meaningful.

Frances

Dan,

I think have actual models to show students is a great way to also get them more interested in the content. Giving everyone a change to participate in an activity is also a great way to get them involved and into the learning process. I sometimes miss that aspect of a face-to-face classroom since I have moved into the cyberworld.

Planning for different learning styles can be interesting in an online environment. I typically use PowerPoint slides for a portion of the class session. That gives those who like to read information a change to view information. I also include some charts and other visuals in the presentations so that those who like to do more than read can also keep focused on the information.

I always use a microphone so that my students can hear my voice.

And since I teach a computer software class, I actually share my desktop with the students so that they can actually see how use a certain feature in the software. I constantly remind them of why they need to use a specific features.

I also review the homework assignment using a PowerPoint presentations.

Throughout the entire class session, I give students an opportunity to ask questions so that they have a comfort level with what is being asked of them in the assignments.

I also have files in the file share area that they can download to review the assignment requirements.

Frances

Teaching in the medical field I like to implement critical thinking questions into course assignments. This gives me the ability to see if students can apply what they are learning to real life experiences.

Each topic I cover in my course is presented in a different way. I show movies, use power points, lecture, do hands on work and allow the students to present projects. This usually covers it all.

Pearlmarie,
This is a very good way to offer instructional variety to your students while expanding their abilities to work in other areas of content input. This way they will be able to use their different learning preferences when they are out in the workplace. This is a win win for everyone.
Gary

In my teaching experiences, I have been able to accommodate leaner preferences by doing the following: First of all, I administer a Learning Style Inventory to the students, then
each student results are given (VAK),students and I discuss each style with visuals, and then the lecture continues with rational as to the importance of students to develop each learning style. Examples of teaching styles are discussed as well. The understanding is that, frankly, it is up to the student to translate teaching styles into a student's learning style. (Example: during verbal lectures a visual student would take notes, underline, highlight, draw charts/maps/symbols and such.)

Thanks Dr. Gary
Make the course like that after lecture I give them the questions and answer from the open book. When the students find out the answers then they make clear conception about the chapter. Then end of the week I give the question closed book.

we start work in the classroom and then students have the oppertunity to work in the lab with real hands on training. I can then work with groups of students at a time to turn the lesson into tactical learning. this really helps the students understand what the lesson is about.

When I teach on a particular topic, I try to tell the students why it is important to know this information and how it will help them out in the field.
