In my courses I have students who are with me for many courses over a 18 month period. It is easy to evaluate my students styles. I simply use a variety of teaching techniques to cover the topics as the students grow.

It is important to know the learning styles of the students. It is a key to success in the class. Sometimes, the students complain about the power point presentation. Now, I know they are not a visual learner. Since I am teaching the fashion design, most of my students are the tactile. It is good lesson.

If you know the learning style of your students you can tailor your lessons so that you reach the most students in the style that they learn in. This should improve the successfulness of the student.

Hi Mary, Thanks for your post to the forum. Sending best wishes as your proceed in your teaching career.

I am a new instructor and I want to reach all of my students. My next term begins in 3 weeks and I will do a brief learning assessment in the first class to help me teach more effectively.

I think it will be beneficial to administer a Learning Style Survey during orientation to allow students to be aware of their own learning styles. The results may be shared with faculty across the board for consideration. However, I think it is difficulty to please everyone. So in general, having a variety/mix of delivery style across the board to accommodate all 4 sensory modalities would be best. It will be difficult to tailor lecture and assignments to individual learning styles. Students are to be given the same assignments to provide consistency.

Since it has been documented that adjusting your approach so it works in conjunction with your students' learning styles results in better performance, grades, etc, I think the benefits are very obvious. I think this might make it necessary to have a more flexible syllabus / master course outline than normal. If you find out that almost all of your class consists of students that aren't fans of auditory learning, it might be wise to shuffle things around and do more hands-on labs and a few less lectures.

when you start understanding the different types of learning of your students it will help you how to set lectures and to prepare for delivering the information

Knowing the learning styles of all my students, will make learning easier for them and teaching the material easier for me.

If you know the learning style of all your students you then can adjust your teaching style to get through to all your students.

Hi Mary, Thanks for your post to the forum. That's excellent that you can receive the information on student learning styles up front! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

We do a learning styles assessment in the first term of classes. Most of the students end up being visual and kinesthetic.

Hi Sarah, Thanks for your post to the forum. That is indeed the beauty of teaching to the learning styles! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

It absolutely helps me with lesson planning. I am able to ensure that I can reach 100% of my students at some point each class day. If I am able to reach all my students, they will more easily grasp the information as well as gain practice with learning using other styles as well.

Matthew, Thanks for your post to the forum. As you mention, preparing to teach to the learning styles does involve more work initially, but then we have many of our materials prepared for future classes. We do need to regularly review and supplement to be sure everything is current.

Knowing the learning styles of your students is extremely helpful because you can adapt different methods of teaching material to be a better effective instructor. You can implement more visual, hands on, and audio aides to get the information across to the students. When that has been established you can then be prepared for the next group and have these asset ready and availible already.

H Darcey, Thanks for your post to the forum. Students do seem to enjoy playing active roles in the classroom and it keeps everyone engaged as well. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.
