Hi Yvonne, Thanks for your post to the forum. As you mention, it is the "mix" of modalities that works best! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I can gauge the way I need to plan my teaching styles by knowing how my students like to learn

The instructional benefit of knowing the learning styles of the students is important because armed with this information you are able to develop ways to effectively assist all of the students in their pursuit of learning. This means mixing the use of Power Points, with discussion groups with other methods to help get your points across.

Knowing the learning style of each student allows for more efficient transfer of knowledge.

Knowledge is power. If you know what style a student learns by, then you can transfer knowledge much more efficiently.

yes I need to know the learning styles of my students and adapt to various needs to reach all students for maximum effectiveness.

Hi Gordon, Thanks for your post to the forum. Good suggestions for an active learning classroom!

If you know the learning styles of your students then you will be able to structure your teaching style to be able to present the information in such a manner so they will stay interrested and focused during your presentation and be able to retain that information.
If the majority of the class are visual and a few are kinesthetic you could spend part of the class doing a colorful ppt. with some cartoons thrown in there and then follow that with a hands on lab using and reinforcing that information.

Hi Sarah, Thanks for your post to the forum. That is a good summary of the importance of teaching to the learning styles. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

Knowing the learning styles of my students help me to organize the content and be able to adapt the various learning styles to my teaching styles. It can help me become an effective instructor because again it will give me an insight on the best way to instruct the students or shall I say the best way to deliver the information to the in such a way that they will understand the information.

Hi Stacey, Thanks for your post to the forum. I am surprised at how many students have never heard about the learning styles. Once they do, they often find new ways to enhance their learning. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I agree with you Jeffrey. Lectures, powerpoints with visual effects, and hands on experience are all efficient ways to deliver the content to each learning styles of the classroom. And to keep the classroom engaged and focused on the material.

I teach all learning styles. I also ask my students in which way they learn best. Knowing this can help every student be successful.

Hi Melissa, Thanks for sharing your own successful experience with adapting to the learning styles! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

Hi Donald, Hopefully the answer is "Yes"! We need to challenge our selves to adapt our delivery to accommodate the learning styles. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I like to teach my class what I want them to learn through lecture and hands on. Then show a demonstration, and then let them do it. I put my students into small groups they seem to enjoy that. They learn well when, they hear feedback from a classmate. I always stress to celebrate your failures the same way you celebrate your successes!!!!

Understanding the preferred learning styles of students is important and can be used in many ways. For example, I had a class last term that was nearly all kinesthetic & visual learners. The class seemed apathetic about the topics being covered in my Cultural Diversity class so I adjusted a group assignment to cater to their learning styles and I saw a huge improvement in the class' retention of content and overall engagement level.

Doesn't the course content challenge the instructor in facilitating the various learning styles.

Hi Mary, Thanks for your post to the forum. Adjusting our delivery to the learning styles does say that we really care about our students' learning. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

Each student is an individual with their own learning style. It is beneficial to instructors and students to be able to use all learning styles in their classrooms. Happier students with better grades. Happier instructor.
