How can you get visual learners to learn other ways beside visual.

Hi Aaron, thanks for your post to the forum. Having students apply what they are learning through presentations is a great idea. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Hi Jamie - Thanks for your post to the forum and for sharing more ideas for engaging visual learners! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

That's a great idea. Too often, I just stick with one color, but I'm sure my visual students would appreciate the different colors to make things stand out.

Because visual learners process information the best when they can see it, incorporating diagrams, graphs, colors, and multimedia into the presentation will engage them. Strategies such as using color to organize information or utilizing flashcards will also be beneficial for the visual learner.

I have my students pick topics associated with the curriculum and present 2 minute power point presentations or poster to the class.

Hi Carol - Thanks for your post to the forum. You shared some excellent examples of application activities for students. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Sometimes I think we over stimulate visual learners, thinking that because that is their strength, that "more is better." One of the things I've found to help learners generalize the concepts is to follow a visual stimulation with an application activity. Example: Graphic organizers have long been the choice of educators for visual learners. While it does help them see the connection and organize the information.....it often stops there. They often need another activity to apply it. Once learners map out a story or a characterization of a concept, they may then need to discuss it with a partner, present it to their group, apply it to another story they've read, or another concept similar (or dissimilar).

A few instructional startegies I have used and currently use are Powerpoint Presentations, overhead projectors for computer classes, and various handouts with diagrams. I teach computer classes so it hits almost every learning style.

Hi Carrie- Thanks for your post to the forum. PPTs are indeed great for visual learners. Inserting video into the PPTs is also great! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Power point presentations are a good way to get to visual learners with the added bonus of being able to get to the auditory learners at the same time. I also think that demonstrating skills is beneficial for visual learners, again with the added bonus of being able to help the kinestetic learners prepare for skill practice sessions.

Hi William - Thanks for your post to the forum. Excellent question. I always go with "less is better"! Here are two sites that have great Powerpoint guidance.

To avoid death by powerpoint, how many lines of text per slide and how many slides overall? I have experienced extremes on either end of the scale and it was not pretty. Participants tend to find something else to attract their interest. Thoughts/comments?

powerpoint is an excellent choice along with disucssion of the presentation

Various films can be utilized and games.

I like to use a variety of colors on the whiteboard as well as colorful powerpoints.

Instructional strategies for visual learners may include presenting assignments based handouts, using flip boards, photos, diagrams, power point presentations, charts, maps, movies and timelines. Students may also be encouraged to construct their own flash cards with illustrations. Instructors should provide computer programs that complement their text books to provide greater visual exposure and practice.

I mainly use power point slides with my chats. I try to make sure they are visually stimulating and effective at the same time. often, if they ask about graphing (math), then I would enter the graphing website with the students and visually show them how the program is run by doing a trial example live.

Hi Maria- As a visual learner myself, I agree completely. It's great that in this age of technology there are so many great online visual aids that we can access. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
