Hi Kathryn, Good strategies - thanks for sharing! Susan

I use Power Point presentation, Movie maker and TED. Students love it.

I try to address the visual learners by making showing illustrations and actually showing students how to do the task. I usually talk about the steps also to help the auditory learners. Sometimes I will also given written steps. I try to address all learning styles when I am teaching so that no student has an advantage over another student.

Hi Angela- I love that idea! Will have to learn how to do it!

I love using Power Points because of the variety. I have just started inserting sound bites from movies that go along with the information and add some fun to the material. you can find a sound bite for just about anything, example, when I am on the topic of safety and paying attention to the end of the animal that bites, I use a Jaws sound bite. It adds some levity and helps the students remember that particular topic.

Hi Kendall , Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, Math is a process that is best explained visually so that the process can be seen and understood. You are using great visual methods! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Some instructional strategies that I use when working with visual learners are using different color markers on the board, lots of handouts with graphs, flowcharts, and tables. As a math instructor, I notice that the visual aspect of actually seeing how the problem is done is important to the students. They feel more comfortable attempting to solve a similar problem on their own.

Hi Dorothy, Great observation and thanks for sharing a great technique! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I just observed a medical terminology class where the teacher used different colors with his notes on the whiteboard. it was so much easier to look at and take in and seemed to help the students separate the information.

Hi Kimberly, Thanks for your post to the forum. Our instructors swear by flashcards, especially for concepts that are primarily memorization. Making the cards themeselves also helps to increase retention. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

In teaching visual identification of parasites; a requirement of the course is for the students to prepare flash cards with the picture of the parasite on one side, and written information on the reverse. With this added requirement, I am seeing better success in identification of parasites.

Hi Craig, That's a great stratgy for visual learners - thanks for sharing!

I format my powerpoints with different color themes thereby separating the knowledge into color related information.

Hi Jessica, Thanks for your post to the forum. You make excellent choices of learning strategies to meet the needs of your diverse learners. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I teach Biology and Anatomy and Physiology, which lend themselves well to visual study. In my lectures, the students have outlines, often with blanks for them to fill in, and I use powerpoint slides with mainly pictures, diagrams, and videos(with minimal text). I also diagram concepts on the whiteboard using markers of different colors. I have the students bring colored pencils or pens to class so that they can do the same in their notes. This also seems to help the kinesthetic learners. Additionally, in some classes, I have students draw important structures (e.g. the heart), rather than just labeling them, and some courses come with coloring workbooks, which again work well for kinesthetic learners.

Hi Hartwell,Thanks for your post to the forum. I especially like your use of screen shots. Nothing beats actually seeing in advance what the students will be seeing out in the field! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I love Power Point Presentations that include a good amount of color and graphics. I find that animations, even those not included in the Power Point program, make effective presentations. I teach computer classes so using screen shots of documents that can then be cropped to specific elements of the page is a great visual presentation.

Hi tracy - thanks for your post to the forum. Congratulations on making power points interesting!! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

When working with visual learners I like utilizing power point presentations. This allows me to place pictures and graphs into the presentation. Students find the pictures interesting.
