I am teaching biology and since my classes are quite long, lasting 4 hours, I am combining different teaching styles that include power point slides supporting lecturing, discussions, short videos, animations, in class group activities. I am a visual learner myself and in my lectures I incorporate what does help me to learn; I make my power point slides colorful, using bright colors for whatever is the most important part. I also include color pictures and diagrams in almost every slide following the notion that "a picture is worth hundreds words".

Hi Michael, You are using a great variety of activities to address the learning styles! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Again the visual is the key. Show graphs, charts pictorals.

Power points, movies, anything that they can see - Are you kidding me?

Some strategies that I have employed that are geared toward visual learners:

Powerpoint presentations with multiple diagrams and videos

Demonstrations of techniques in class

Providing websites for them to access and review at home

Field trips to observe certain techniques actually used in the field

Hi Chelsea, Thanks for your post to the forum. I teach primarily online now and also use PPTs in my classes. The availability of video clips is wonderful! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I find that having a powerpoint and utilizing lots of images and video clips works well. I teach Humanities, so these are an integral part of the course anyhow, but visual learners don't do well with straight lecture and an image - they require some outline or notes to follow (I know because I am a visual learner and struggled with this in my own coursework).

Hi Adam, Thanks for sharing an excellent idea for visual learners! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

One method I've used with visual learners is attaching an image to vocabulary terms. Chiaroscuro, for example, is the contrast of light and dark in film. I used a picture that had chiaroscuro from the Christopher Nolan _Batman_ series via a PowerPoint presentation.

Hi Daniel, Yes, the more interaction that you can create with the visuals, the better! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Hi Carla, Good advice to send the Powerpoints to students in advance, it hopefully also gets their interest. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

As a massage therapy teacher I will show pictures of the body and show the direction the strokes should flow to help the visual learners. I found that showing more than just the body but drawling on the pictures to show the direction of the stroke really helps the visual learners by getting it to stick a lot better.

I am avid user of Powerpoints and projection. Student seem to really enjoy. They are especially nice if you send them to student in advance and they print out handouts. Student can follow along the presentation and make notes on the powerpoints.

Visual learners are best served by using graphics and things that stimulate the visual experience. This can be pictures with color, graphs, images, maps tables and charts for some examples.
Combined these with some explanation of what they are seeing, they will learn the most.

Hi Sandy, Thanks for your post to the forum. I think your choices for visual learners are very useful. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I did enjoy this course. I knew that there were several learning styles but this course provided more indepth info. I found the infor on testing the most interesting. This was all new information to me. I always use the various formats on each test I make trying to get the "right mix" but this program realy opened my eyes about T/F - Matching - Multipe Choice etc. I had no clue to the positive and negatives of each question type. Very interesting - and I plan on reevaluating my test questions with this new insight.

I believe some of the best instructional strategies for visual learners are games with pictures and powerpoints as well utilizing the different resources on the internet.

Hi Mary, Thanks for your post to the forum. I agree that using videos and case studies can really portray the relevance of concepts. It's wonderful how many resources we have access to these days! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
