Hi James - Thanks for your post to the forum. You are doing a great job traching to the learning styles! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

In restaurnat operations, I will have a power point with pictures, and when possible, I will accompany the ppower point with lecture and demonstration, hitting on as many learning styles as possible.

Hi Robert - Since they will need to be able to demonstrate mastery of those activities in the workforce, it is really excellent that you give them many opportunities to hone those skills. Susan

Most of my students enjoy working with hands-on practice. Therefore, when I teach wine and beverage managment classes, I focus a lot on their participation by letting them opening the bottle, pouring the beverages, analyzing the labels, etc...

Hi Kris - Thanks for your post to the forum. We are so have access to so many technologies these days! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

The use of power point slides in combination with video clips and pictures all give the visual learner material they prefer.

Hi Monty - I teach mostly online now also. I love to find videos that are relevant to what I am teaching. Mostly I find them on YouTube but often a Google search gives me some other great ones. You can then post the link to your class's online page or copy the source code and paste it to your class. My students love them! Susan

Power Point would be my best, with colors, and cartoons

Being an instructor online, the only media that I use is power point, with lots of graphs, written material, and color. I know that I am lacking some other means to illustrate the topic. But, what else I should be doing?

Hi John - Great way to address the visual learning styles! I am a visual learner and often have a difficult time creating a cake with only the text recipe. Best wishes- Susan

I like to draw diagrams on the whiteboard. If I am discussing how to mix or assemble a cake I actually draw a cross-section of what the cake should look like when assembled on the board and I draw a mixing bowl with different colors for each different ingredient so the students can distinguish it better. It seems to work.

Hi Richard - your method of using the whiteboard during lecture is quite effective! Students often get "lost" as terms, stats, etc. are unrolled on the board. Highlighting what is important in a manner that becomes routine is a great strategy. Susan

When doing lectures or demonstrations, I find breaking the class content up on the white board using five specific areas and various colored markers to highlight items of importance and even create an eye-catching item that naturally inclines the students to look at the information helps immensely. The students quickly learn where to look for exactly what information they need.

PPT, handouts, and class exercises used for discussion.

Presentations with Graphics and diagrams, I also like to add relevent videos where possible. they seem to be rememerable to many types of adult learners.

Hi Joseph- That is a great compromise as you lecture! Best wishes - Susan

Hi Susan, I teach the Central Sterile Processing Program and a majority of what I teach has theory behind the practical. I find that most of my students tend to exhibit the tactile learning style. So what I do when is lecture for about 18 minutes at a time and then introduce the object of which I am lecturing about to my students. This allows my students to, for lack of better terms, place a name to a face. Basically, my visual students not only get the visual aspect of my lecture, but I reinforce it with the tactile style of teaching.

Hi Janet - Thanks for your post to the forum. I don't know what discipline you teach but in my experience also, students do seem to enjoy these sort of projects. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I have my students do a multi-media project in every class. This really appeals to all the visual learners as part of the project must always be something that takes into account a video or costume.

I try and focus on class driven projects. I focus on the understanding and practices by use of demonstration and then have my students apply the techniques to ensure understanding.
