As a visual learner myself, I know I have take an assessment of my class and gained a better insight of how my students learn best. Using powerpoint presentations, videos, graphs will assist visual learner in gaining an understanding of classes.
Some instructional strategies to use when working with visual learners include PowerPoint presentations, pie graphs and charts, pictures, and illustrations.
I use Power points as part of the lecture. Something about the students seeing the information only enhances their ability to learn. I do not use the Power Points alone I edit the Power Points and lecture important points. T.V.shows are also employed as well as DVD's.
HI Stephanie- Thanks for your post to the forum. I like to print out my PPTs in the "Notes" format so that students can take notes on the slides as I lecture. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I have noticed that students seem to respond very well if we use the whiteboard or learning maps. Learning maps seem to spark quite a bit of interest to adults.
I prefer to use power-point and youtube.com videos in class.
I have been working on Power Point presentations for class. My Power Point presentations include many visual examples so the students can see what I am talking about. I find it is also helpful to give the students an outline of the important concepts in the textbook along with the Power Point. I noticed an improvement in the test grades of the class after I did the outline for them.
Hi Gene - That speech is very memorable. You Tube is a terrific resource! Best wishes - Susan
Demonstrations, Power points, films, props, tours.
After completing this course yesterday, I searched You Tube for Dr. Kings I Have a Dream speech and played it for my class today. I was taken by surprise at the positive participation that came out as a result. I normally lecture but will now mix it up based on what I learned here.
I, myself, is a visual learner. So, I do use a lot of visual things in the classroom. Also, I do ask students to come up with gamex/puzzles/bingo etc. This way the interest of learning is up and students and very energetic.
Hi Tina- Teaching Math online presents all sorts of problems but it seems that you have come up with some good solutions! Susan
I teach several subjects in the billing and coding areas including medical terminology, pharmacology. I use different instructional strategies in the classroom keeping in mind that 50% of the students are visual learners. So, I try to balance out my teaching strategies to accommodate all students in the classroom.
As an online instructor of math, I must reach all types of learners and visual learners are numerous. To reach them, I suggest several websites where a human works out the problems step by step. When they need additional help, I will send to them alternate ways of solving the problems in a power point or other document. Here I use color and font to make the steps easy to understand.
Hi Jayasaree- I'm so happy that you have found this course useful! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Hi Timothy - Thanks for your post to the forum. I especially liked your idea of using the laser pointer in conjunction with your powerpoint - very effective for your visual learners. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
By completing this course, I have learned new strategies that I will begin to apply in my classroom.
Being a visual learner myself, I use a lot power point presentations to include videos and some computer based training. I feel very comfortable using these methods not only for the visual learners in my class but it also helps me with my instruction techniques. Sometimes I will use a laser pointer to reference a word or main point by making a circle with the laser pointer around the word on the screen. I use it to grab their attention and hopefully it will aid their retention.
I have put stars on my presentations to alert the students that this needs to be written in their notes. I only allow hand-written notes to be used on tests.
Hi Patricia - Thanks for your post to the forum. Having access to the instruments that they will use in their careers is wonderful for your students! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
