Hi Stacy - Actually handling the hardware really does enable students to grasp the function of the equipment which is essential as they learn concepts related to it. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Hi Cheryl - Thanks for your post to the forum. Your experience has clearly enabled you to develop techniques that work for all your students! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
LOL Robert! Very creative ( and amusing!) ideas for visual learners! Best wishes - Susan
Hi Veronica- Thanks for your post to the forum. It sounds like you probably teach Math. If that is the case, working through problems on the board is excellent! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
HI Nevine- Thanks for your post to the forum and for sharing some useful strategies for visual learners! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Hi Theresa- Thanks for your post to the forum. I agree that students really benefit from having a visual of what the end product of a project should look like. Of course we can always give extra points for creativity etc. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I find showing finished examples of what they are about to be assigned has been very helpful for them. My visual learners often ask, when presented with a new assignment, "do you have student examples of this assignment?". I think they do better in the planning stages when they have a visual of the end result.
using videos, pictures and let the students do their own tracking maps for different subjects
I have to admit that I am poor when it comes to visual learners and meeting their needs. In my full time job, the technology that I have is dustless chalk. I don't create a lot of power points because I don't have a SMARTboard or an LCD projector!
However, I try to do a lot of problems and just ask that they watch the first couple of problems until they feel comfortable either trying on their own or asking questions.
Some times a cartoon will help students remember a principle of physics. For instance, students often forget to include g (acceleration due to gravity)in W = Mgd, the equation for work. On the white board,I draw a stick figure of a man climbing a flight of stairs while carrying a sign saying: Will WORK for Miller Genuine Draft. At the top of the stairs is another stick figure carrying the sign: P. E.= Miller Genuine Draft. These cartoons help the students remember that work (W = Mgd)and potential energy (P. E. = Mgd)are equal and that energy is conserved. Other phenomena can be represented by this method, also.
have been an instructor for quite some time and I find that for visual learners can be more successful if you allow them an opportunity for hands-on.
A lot of reading material is boring to them. I usually use power point presentations and bring material to class that they can physically see
.
I also encourage them if we have a reading assignment to use colorful highlighters so that the material does not get boring to them.
I also find that in a classroom setting with different type of learners I tend to accommodate to a neutral level of teaching by the collaboration of a wide range of problem solving approaches.
My main goal is that the student masters the class objective, and I do this by setting the mood in the very beginning of class by telling them what my expectations are up front.
In working in IT I prefer using a hands on approach using the actual equipment for my visual learners. An example is taking apart the computers piece by piece so they can see the actual parts while explaining what each part does. This is especially useful during our lower level courses. Alot of my students when entering this program have never seen inside a computer and it gives them a better idea to visualize with the learning process.

I like using power point presentations but also with pictures so they can not only see and read but comprehend the contrast of what it means visually.

Working with a visual learner you need to have teach many ways in showing visualy, power point slides, pictures, anotations, diagrams, kinesteticly and all working together as one.
It will keep the student entertained in wanting to learn.
PowerPoints are a great visual tool to use. Also, hands-on projects, this is so the student can actually perform the tasks.
To use a variety of visual options. Using physical objects, power point, the board are all good options to include.
Hi Stephen- Thanks for your post to the forum. Visual learners especially like Power Points! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Visual learners assimilate material by seeing it. I would use color to highlight important concepts. I would make list and categorize information and demonstrate ideas in brainstorming bubbles. I would utilize DVDs and computer software to enhance my lectures. I would incorporate visualization aids to enhance memory.
Visual learners MUST see the material to be more successful. Powerpoint, hand-outs, pictures, tactical tools are effective.
