Using more types of presentations help the students to learn more efficiently. I teach computers and networking. In my classes I have discussions on the Text, I show parts and talk about there functions, pass the parts around the room, and give them hands on projects when they apply.
Hi Warren - Welcome to ED 103 and thanks for your post to the forum! Currently I teach only online and you are correct - it's really difficult to add tactile geared content. I encourage students to do collages, sculpture etc. to photograph and submit digitally. You can also direct your students to take field trips to visit produce vendors or ask permission to observe or volunteer to work in kitchens etc. Here's a link to an article about this topic:

Susan,
How have you experienced the online environment. While technology allows for quite a bit of variety, I see tactile having the most potential to be missed. Solutions?
By doing this you give the students a greater chance of being successful. Even though out in the "real world" students will have to learn in ways they don't function the best in, you need to try to help them learn in and maybe even discover their learning style.
it is important because everyone learns differently - even within the categories suggested in this module. It is necessary to support different learning styles for each student to be able to reach their full potential.
I think it is important to provide approaches and resources that complement the learning styles of your students because each student is different. Students in career colleges come from a diverse background and the needs of each student should be identified.
It is of greatest importance because my success as an educator is directly related to the success of my students! If the instructor is student centered, I cannot imagine that the choice would ever be made to ignore employing techniques that can improve the comprehension and information retention of the student.
It shows to them that you are dedicated and care about their education. It shows you have taken the time and care to make sure they get the information.
HI Bryon - Thanks for your post to the forum! I agree, it is difficult to address every learning style in every class. We just need to do our best as often as posssible. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career and all the best in 2010! Susan
HI Mike- Thanks for your post to the forum! I have also seen some really terrific textbooks that are so engaging. I hope we will see many more! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career and all the best in 2010! Susan
It seems to be one of the most effective tools in keeping the larger majority of the class focussed. By changing it up now and again, more students stay involved and assist with keeping momentum going.
I believe it is important to support all learning styles because all students will then be successful!
to ensure the adult learners take an active part in the learning process and value the instruction they are receiving
Yes, look to youtube.com and similar sites. There are great and useful minutes.
I agree entirely.
I might add that I have become interested in textbooks that make this easier. I am attracted to texts that have colored pages, box frames, tearouts, fill-ins, pictures, and illustrations. I find these are more engaging and track better with the intent of my syllabus.
I hope to try to add some more visual aids and demonstrations in class.
At times it can be hard to provide all the different types of learning styles in class.
Hi Rennie- Welcome to ED 103. Thanks for a really well written post that details the importance of addressing the learning styles and especially how this should be part of curriculum development - excellent! Best wishes - Susan
There is a lot of truth in this. For example, I find that students who miss the first day simply do not grasp goals, values, energies, etc.
However, I believe it takes more than one day to figure out their learning styles. I had a student who flat out lied that he had a learning disability that required him to use laptop in class as an accommodation. I discovered later that day that he had no such accommodation. Out learning does not categorize such behavior.
I am looking for specific input froms instructors in College Composition.
