When I teach, I use all forms, every student is different and this way, I reach them all
The benefits of knowing the learning styles of students enables the instructor to hopefully reach every student and insure the information being presented is comprehended. This knowledge can assist in being a more effective instructor resulting in higher test scores, in class participation, attendance, and positive feedback from the students.
Applying the most effective learning style will help your students recieve the information in an effective manner. This will allow you to move through material at a better pace.
Hi Tunessa- Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, exactly, when we tailor our delivery to the learning styles of our student, we get amazing results! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Hi Paula - Thanks for your post to the forum and for sharing a great description of the importnace of the learning styles. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Especially with career college students, understanding learning styles is crucial to keeping all of the students engaged. If my lecture portion goes on too long, I will usually lose 1/2 the class...I must always be sure to include videos for support, perhaps a case study, and if possible, something that gets them up and out of their chair.
Knowing how your students learn most effectively allows the instructor to prepare presentations in ways that enhance the students ability to learn successfully and, as a result, also helps improve student retention and satisfaction. As an additional outcome, improved student learning improves instructor satisfaction!
Course content is ment for the student to understand content, and be successful in the profession. It is the instructors respnsibility to try to delivery the content directed for all students
knowing the learning styles of students helps you to reach a larger percentage of the group and a larger percentage will be succssful in ubderstanding the information
The students are more involved in their own learning and more enthusiastic about the course material because they experience a sense of mastery with less struggle (compared to trying to learn the material using a style that is less comfortable for them.) It is also helpful to other students to observe others learning utilizing other information-gathering techniques.
Individual differences matter most. Students have different learning styles, some are active, passive, agreessive, etc. Knowing their styles will help the instructor adjust the learning activities to where the stuents will comprehend most.
HI Tracey- thanks for your post to the forum. You are doing a great job teaching to the learning styles ! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Knowing the learning styles of my students helps me spend less time reiterating my lesson plan and focusing on giving the students the best experience. Communicating effectively by variing my instructional style to meet the majority of learning styles will provide for greater understanding, content retention and higher scores on exams.
Knowledge of the students learning styles will help the instructor to incorporate some or many of these styles into the classroom.
Knowinig the learning styles of your students will help you better reach your students in their prefered method of learning. Additionally, with this knowledge you can prepare course material that will use different delivery methods in order to reach more students and not to teach in your own prefered manner.
I always ask my students at the beginning of a term what type of learning style they prefer. If they are not sure, we do an activity to help them understand what type of learner they are. I always try to to teach to the majority but make sure I include activities for all learners. So after I lecture with a PowerPoint, we break up into small groups and apply what was just learned.
It is important to teach to every learning style so every student understands the material. That's why they are taking the class.
In knowing the learning styles of my students, I can better plan my lessons to accomodate thier needs. This provides knowledge that is beneficial for activities, exams, assessments and overall learning so that all students can be actively engaged.
By covering all the learning styles in your lesson plan you are insuring that everyone stays on the same page and is learning at the same pace. No one gets "left behind".
Thank you for the support:) Try it; it's amazing what a difference it makes and the whole class feels they are in the same boat. No one is better than the one they are sitting next to; it's stil all "new" material for everyone. We all have the same goal to reach. The pressure's off! Happy Teaching!!!
Wow, that is a really great comment, i hadn't thought of it that way before. Makes sense and maybe it helps persolilize the class also?! Mindy
