I find the same, students learn what they need to know for a test without actually learning and understanding it. When you ask questions it forces the student to think through the process and allows for focusing on areas that they may not undestand as well as they though.

Questioning is an area that I am trying to develop more in my instruction. I have discovered a couple of things so far: when dealing with sequential matters, I can use it to reinforce a process. When helping students to "connect the dots", questioning can help them make those connections and apply to several situations beyond the one at hand.

Questioning sessions can be utilized as learning tools as students can learn by hearing other students questions & the responses / discussions therefter. Also timid students will feel less intimidated if they understand that they're not the only ones who have questions but that others in class do as well.

As a math teacher I normally like to introduce new material with questions to determine prior student experience and misconceptions before showing them how to do something. After introducing one or two concepts I assign a few problems to work on in class and circulate to chack progress. After a suitable amount of time I ask for answers and see if there are any questions or issues. At the start of class I always give time for questions on the homework that is due and if there are none or I feel there are some issues they should be asking about, based on the formative questions from the previous lesson, I will ask a few questions myself.

Questioning sessions as learning tools encourages
students to seek out answers before class if they
know there will be discussion and they will have
an opportunity to participate.
