By getting students involved in asking and
answering questions you enable students to
get to know each other and build community
so that the students who understand the
material in the class will work with the
less successful student.

Questioning sessions should always be part of your lesson plan. To me it is a better way to deteremine if students are learning. I have used questioning sessions as reviews for upcoming assessments, but not all the students have figured it out yet. There are many times the exact question I propose in class will be exactly phrased on their assessment. That also helps me determine who is really listening and paying attention during lectures, activities, etc.

Hi Tricia, Great idea to make watching videos more interactive! Susan

I have videos I play in class and have a follow along questions. They enjoy answering them and it helps keep them focused to the task at hand. We end each movie with a question and answer series. It works great.

Questions can be used to get students to engage.
They can be used to assess existing knowledge or acquisition of new knowledge.
They can be used to add knowledge, especially if there are good mixes of experience in the class.
They can be used to assess who is doing what homework and how well they are learning the material.
Questions can be a teaching technique.

I use it to help the students realize that they already know what they think they didn't. I go through a medical chart and ask questions along the way. What do the abbreviations mean, what is the medication used for, what could these symptoms lead to?

For me the questioning session is probably the most important part of the class besause this is the way I undestand if the students comprehend what we are discussing in class. And the students very enthusiastically participate in it, most of the cases.

Thank you for responding to my posting, Susan. The students need to utilize those critical thinking skills, as reference tools will not always be made available.

How can question sessions be used as learning tools? I must say, that I am one who strongly advocates questioning, as a tool to assist in understanding. Questions help us to see concepts through varied perspectives. Our questions can also cue us into ideologies, which can provide analytical enlightenment. This can provide insight, a type, which helps us to formulate better-informed decisions.

It is a way to learn what the students really understand and give you a chance to expand on anything that they are not clear about.

It will make you understand if the students are grasping the content. You can take a different direction on instruction of that subject if they are not.

I ask questions as I teach. This gives me a good picture of how many in my class know material and how many still need more help understanding. I will then try to involve the students that are less sure of the material. I always ask if people need more explaination and offer my help.

it is a learning tool for both the students and the instructors. The students get to listen and absorb the material as well as become actively engaged in the learning process. The instructor also gets the opportunity to assess where the students are on retating the information .

Hi Thomas, Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, active learning certainly does improve retention. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Involving the class in discussions and questioning takes away the passive learning aspect which in turn will make the class more fun. Students will retain material much better when they are involved.

i find the same thing, students tend to study the print but not have an in depth understanding of the material.

G , Thanks for sharing a great summary of the value of questioning! Susan
