Hi Gina- Thanks for your post to the forum. Having students self-assess is an excellent strategy. have you noticed that often students are more critical of themselves than we would be?

Hi - Thanks for your post to the forum. As you mention, asking students to demo or "teach-back" is an excellent tool that increases retention.

Hi Theresa - I especiallky like that you ask student to self-evaluate projects in relation to client criteria. It so prepares them for life in their career! Best wishes -Susan

It lets the students evaluate themselves so they know what their strenghts and weakenesses are.

explaining / showing a student something then allowing the student to relate it back to myself is wonderful. Taking it a step further, having the student demo or explain to the rest of the class builds cinfidence in the student as they seem to comprehend and retain material bettet.

I don't feel qualified to speak regarding other professional areas taught in career college settings but in the graphic design field, self-assessment happens often in small group critique/discussion settings where students explain what they have developed and how it fits the criteria. Sometimes I will have students write how effective their project fits the client criteria and how to improve that fit.

I often ask students to tell me what they think of their skills on a practical (not written) test. It seems to make the student more receptive to constructive criticism. I don't feel like I'm having to pick apart their work and they don't become defensive.

It reinforces what they have allready learned or it helps them to see their mistakes and relearn the correct information. It also helps the other students feel more comfortable with the learning process because they are being assesd by their peers and friends not by their instructor directly

by letting the students create and discuss their own points of view , needs and applications

Hi Katrina - Thanks for your post to the forum. I agree that it is very usefull for students to be kept aware of their progress and for that input to also be used by instructors. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Some of our students have not been successful in their acedemic careers. Part of this may be due to them not understanding what type of learners they are. Self-assessments can help them understand an effective way of learning for them.

Self-assessments can keep students motivated by them having a visual log of their progress and knowledge base. It can also evaluate the instructor, class objectives and clarity of class content.

I believe it will give them the concept of how they can use the tools and how to apply their skills to their goals in steps to finish college.

I believe that a student taking assessment and also see its evaluation and help them how to tackle the way should study and apply how to use the tools to their benefit.

It makes the student aware of their strong points of understanding the material and the topics were they need to do a little more work to understand the material.

Hi Ellis- You mention an important point - students must know what their career goals are before they can gauge their progress towards that goal. Best wishes - Susan

It seems to me self-assessment requires a certain amount of objectivity about, and patience with, oneself. Therefore, above and beyond whatever particular course in which a student might undertake self-assessment, development of objectivity and patience are important constituents of growth.

So, OK, assuming objectivity and patience in a student, self-assessment in a career college setting is a personal feedback tool to check progress against stated career education goals. The key to using this tool, however, is for the student to articulate career education goals.

In sum, assuming the requisite objectivity and patience, student self-assessment would be most effective if goals are spelled out in advance and self-assessment is used to measure progress towards those goals.

HI Diane - Thanks for sharing a good summary of why self-assessment is valuable! Susan

Students decide to attend a career college because they have a defined goal. Allowing students to do self-assessment empowers students to see their goal in relation to what they have learned and how they can apply it in a real world setting of their new profession.

Self-assessments makes the students aware of the work they may need to apply themselves at more. There may be particular areas that are weaker than others.
