Hi Anita- Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, students gain a lot of insight through self-assessment! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I feel that this is a great way of expressing the advantages of self assessment. Sometimes I am not aware of the fact that I have confused students and need to go back and clarify.

It allows them to put their knowledge to the test and see instant results for themselves.

That is a good idea, to have the students grade one another anonymously. Often students are unwilling to be critical of other students, even when constructive criticism would be useful. They might be more willing to give better feedback, if they can do it anonymously.

It can help guide the student and instructor in areas that can be improved.

Hi Susan,

I have been doing this for some time without even knowing that I actualy was assessing the students. Until I took this course and basicely explained the many aspects of the learning cycle.
Susan, At the start of my classes I some times ask simple questions about the type of components that one may come accross out in the field of a hvac unit? Trust me on this one, It's huge and I get all kinds of answers some good and some bad and basicaly not always everyone joins in. I think it is because I try to keep it none threatning personaly.I have found that if I keep it as a group then even the shy or quite sit in the corner students open up and it gives them all a sence of belonging without showing weakness.Doing this I get strong ideas on how to approuch all my students. I'm not sure if this is what your asking of me, but I look at teaching alot differently now. My biggest concern is questions to ask and making them clear.
Do to my schedual I finished this course today but even sitting in my class room I'm thinking how I can make it better or how I can teach better so that ALL my students excell. I hope that I can stay in touch with you to ask questions.
Thank you, This has helped me alot.

I think that self-assessment helps students internalize the standards by which their products will be judged and performance. These assessments can be used by students while working on a project and determine how their work and if they go up to expectations. I think and helps them develop the skills necessary to assess their own progress.

Hi Susan - Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, self assessments can serve as checkpoints to let students know where they stand compared to their long term goal. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Hi Mary - thanks for your post to the forum. Using the ungraded quizzes is a good idea. It is less stressful, and as you say, it prepares them for exams. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

The student and educator can see where the short terms goals are in comparison to long term goals.
This gives the instructor some more information.

I use ungraded quizzes to help students see where they might have missed a concept. It gives them a clearer picture of what to study for the exams.

By demonstrating the tasks to which the instruction applied. If a step is omited, and the demonstration doesn't work, it is not a failure, but a chance to review and correct the mistake.

Students can make an assessments of how well they are understanding the information in a course.

Self Assessment is a great tool because it allows the student to see his/her progress without feeling criticized by there instructor.

HI Joel - Thanks for your post to the forum. You describe excellent strategies to help students take an active role in their learning. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Hi Romeo- You are quite welcome - I'm glad that you got some useful ideas from this module. It's great that you are giving such immediate feedback to your students! Susan

Students will definitely know how much they had comprehend or learned so far. They can assess themselves thru writing and we can use this as a baseline on how to go forward in our teaching or instructional plan with them.
A good example which I frequently do is after completing anatomy and physiology of an organ I asked them to make a quick summary of what they had learned. Realizing the adequate knowledge they have from what they wrote then I go forward to pathology of that same organ.
It makes my life much easier as an instructor and both ends are happy.
Thanks to the detailed discussion of this very important topic, it compliments a lot to our teaching method.
