Hi Joe, Thanks for your post to the forum. The critical thinking skills that you are requiring of your students will be very valuable to them in their future careers. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

Hi Lindsey, Thanks for your post to the forum. The information you get from those quizzes are also really valuable as you plan the next lesson.

Susan Polick

I use discussions at the begining of each class to have students present what they learned the previous class and from the preparory readings for teh current class. Short quizes, papers and projects are introduced to tie concepts together. In addition, exercises are introduced to evaluate the ability to apply the concepts.

At the conclusion of each class session, I plan to administer an "review" quiz for the students. This will help the students to understand how well they understand the class discussion and materials. Collectively, the "review" quizzes create a valuable study guide for examines.

Hi Jeffrey, Simulations are especially effective teaching tools!

Hi Dr. Carlton, These are also scenarios that they will encounter in the workplace so are useful to practice as students.

Using peer evaluations and oral presentations are formative assessment strategies that are quite effective in the classroom. They are able to see and feel how they are in control on their quest to success.

Our facility has check off/compentencies to ensure the students are actually learnign what has been taught to them by safely and accurately demonstrating teh task at hand.

Hi Karen, You are using timely assessment very well!

Hi Su, Thanks for sharing some good formative evaluation ideas!

Susan Polick

The textbook has some "test yourself" questions interspersed amongst each chapter. I use those to spark a class discussion to get a feel for how well they comprehend the material and to emphasize their need to keep up with their reading. I have weekly quizzes and weekly labs which provide more hands and group activities on the lecture material and is where I can assess how they are doing in a less formal setting.

We use the traditional final exam that is comprehensive in nature. I also couple this assessment with an expedition where the student is measured on his content knowledge and communication skills.

Ms. Polick,

In the courses that I teach, we include weekly assessments that tests the learner on what was learned that week. Leading up to the assessment, however the learner must complete discussion topics, complete assignments, then they would take the assessment. I admit that not all of my learners follow this order, and I find that those who leave the assessment for last score better than those who jump on the assessment without completing the assignments.
Other strategies include having a self - test in the course, as a multiple choice, and also as a matching game, using the mouse to drag items (this seems to be the most popular hit). Thank you.

Cheers

Hi Dedre, Another important part of the "Exit Ticket" idea would be to provide students with some feedback on what you leraned from their "Tickets".

Susan Polick

An example of a formative evaluation method would be: Exit Tickets
1. Give students “tickets” – small pieces of paper designed to look like tickets, but with space for
writing.
2. Ask students two questions. One that requires a factual answer about the big idea of today’s
lesson, but in their own words. A second question should require more explanation of a
concept.
3. Give students five minutes at the end of class to write their answers. Their names do not go on
these exit tickets.
4. They must give you an Exit Ticket to leave class for the day.
5. Analyze the tickets to learn how many students got the big idea and how they understand it or
misunderstand it. Photocopy 4-6 on a single sheet of paper for your portfolio. Select ones that
you learned something about your students from that you didn’t know before reading the Exit
Tickets

Hi Sandra, Thanks for your post to the forum. I really like the 3-2-1 strategy! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

Susan Polick

I use several formative assessments such as observations in the classroom, quizzes, worksheets/handouts, etc., but the one I like most is the 3-2-1 strategy. By having students list three things they learned, two things they found interesting and one question they still have after a lecture or project provides for a great formative assessment. It generates additional discussions in the classroom which can be used as an extra assessment.

Using a diagnostic test to find out what students know before beginning a course helps me to identify any misconceptions that they may have about the content I'm going to be dealing with.

Hi Stephanie, Thanks for your post to the forum. The "mini-huddles" are way less intimidating than the full classroom. Thanks for sharing! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I have students summarize and present section of a subject we covered
