In our clinical sessions, we use mini group huddles to discuss their favorite learning moment for the day.The students bring up critical thinking elements that others might not have thought about. It is an extra avenue for knowledge. It is a minute discussion.

I give a lot of quizzes to evaluate how I am relating the infomation to the students, so when they take the exams and complete homework, they should have all their skills necessary.

We use a lot of different types of evaluations throughout the time the students are in our classes, one of which is after learning about a topic the students will go through different "hands-on" competencies. Even a student that doesn't perform well on written exams can do extraordinarily well when it comes to the physical tests that they are given. That can really boost a student's morale.

Hi Rodney, Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, formative assessments give us and our students valuable information that will aid us in planning our instruction. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

A formative evaluation can be given thru out the course to measurse the learning of the students and how well they are retaining and learning the material.

i think formative methods is good for the students to interact with each other and performing better the task or project.

I have graded quizzes on my material weekly. I will often give the studets their grade on the quiz and also their current grade in the class so they can see how they are progressing.

Hi Terry, Thanks for your post to the forum. we have recently incorporated "clickers" into our on-ground classes and are working on getting 'polls' into our online classes. Cool stuff!! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

The obvious strategies are: quizzes, student presentations, research papers, and graded homework. One strategy that I would REALLY like to have (but don't): Student response systems! The SRS provides frequent feedback to the instructor whether they are effectively communicating and allows even timid students to answer questions.

I have found that creating an 'objective' board lets the students know what will be discussed that class period. Then the material is covered and I do an end-of-class quiz where the students can all interact, use their book, look up on internet, etc. to answer the questions.
It gives me feedback as to how the material is being understood and if there are areas where I need to be more explicit. It is my wish that each student receives a 100% but it is surprising that over half do not. I stress that group interaction and participation is the way of the world and they have a chance to learn group dynamics now that will serve them the rest of their career.

Hi Christine, That regular assessment and feedback is essential! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I give the students a project at the end of the chapters that will be graded to keep the students informed of their progress.

Quizzes, discussion questions, games, brainstorming, outlines, rought drafts

Quizzes, pre-writing, outlines, rough drafts , and games are some formative assessments.

Hi Robin, Although some students do not like working on teams , it does prepare them for the workplace. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I agree! I enjoy having a game, or team projects as well. The team projects foster learning on many different facets for the students, like working with others, and appreciating the strengths of all the team members.

I love to use feedback sessions, and observe the students performance. It allows for alot of interaction one-on-one. I can praise and offer direction when needed.

Jeopardy like fun games played on the topic of the class as a group.

ungraded short quizes where all students are participating.

online forums

online quizes etc

Pay close attention to the level of how they retain the information they are being presented .
