When teaching a concept I often ask my students to rate their level of understanding by holding up fingers 4 for complete understanding, and so on.

Hi Christa, Great idea! Can I borrow it?

Susan Polick

Hi James, I really like that idea!

We have weekly “labs” where the student performs a task or project with a group or on their own. We also have course content tests to evaluate their classroom comprehension.

At the conclusion of a lesson, I sometimes have students complete a 3-2-1, which is a simple review activity. An example from a lesson on theme in literature might go as follows:
List 3 ways an author creates theme, 2 themes from a novel you've read, and 1 way that theme is different from moral.

I frequently use thumbs up/thumbs down to do a quick check if most students understand a new concept.

Hi David, Thanks for your post to the forum. You are using a great variety of assessments!

For each of our lessons the students are given a classroom presentation and discussion, followed by a graded hands on project to complete related to the previous classroom work. Then after we talked about it and we practiced doing that learned skill we use a short test to evaluate their understanding of the material.

Hi Pamela, Thanks for your post to the forum. Frequent quizzes are very valuable to give us feedback that we need to guide our instruction. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

We use quizzes routinely throughout the lecture because it touches on the information they just learned and lets us see how well they are retaining what it being taught and reviewed.

Hi Orvileta, Although my online students groan (virtually!) when i assign a project, they usually end up really enjoying them!

Some formative evaluation strategies that one can use to assess students include:
special assignments, quizes, and projects.

They should be spinkled throught the couse to provide proper feedback to the instructor.

I love projects. It really gets the students away from pen and paper assessments and gets them engaged in a creative way. Once students have completed their projects I always have them present them even if it is a few facts about the subject that their peers might not know. Students get to think outside the box, work together and educate one another in a constructive manner.

Hi Robert, Thanks for your post to the forum. Using two types of assessments of the same material is a wise strategy. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

First I believe that evaluation should be timely and often. I have a quiz (I call test one). It is graded while they are working on a “project” and returned before the end of class. The quiz gives me one evaluation and the project gives me another. By assessing twice in different formats I believe is much more accurate.
