Hands on learning objectives
As, a librarian, it is my goal to assist students with their research and citation of their research. I design, hands on "tests" that help students understand how to use the library. I don't often have to use a test, but I do quiz them while they are using the library's resources.
Hi Tracey- Thanks for your post to the forum. You provided an excellent summary of why questioing and observation is essential. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
While the written quizzes and tests are very important, questioning techniques are equally important in establishing an ongoing analysis of student progress. Asking the more difficult comprehension, application, and analysis questions will help an educator to determine if students are "getting it", or if further learning is necessary before moving on to another topic is practical. Hands on tasks, observed by the instructor, can validate student comprehension of subject matter that is difficult to demonstrate on a paper test.
I have to agree with Annette, Carol does a wonderful job getting the students to use the library for research, which inturns gives us instructors a hand. We have students we are more knowledgeable because they know where to get the information for reseaching topics and since they are cited properly we can easily check them out.
Hi Tami - Thanks for your post to the forum. What discipline do you teach? Are your students mostly kinesthetic? Best wishes- Susan
I find that students understand the material better if they can actually physically handle the item being tested on.
I agree. The stations for learning and testing work so well.
Hi Robert - Thanks for your post to the forum. Do you assess how well the students perform in the hands on activities? Is that included in the grading? Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
a block of instruction is given along with detailed visual information. a test is given then the hands on experance is given to the student. It covers much of the teaching objectives and styles.
I also test/quiz in the same sort of fashion. This is either done individually or with a partner. This way the students get to move around from station to station and get points!
HI Gail - Thanks for your post to the forum. You are making great use of application testing. Do you use any written assessments in your classes?
Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
My hands on test/quizzes are basically setting up stations and they have to do a certain task or identify something at that station. Works good for me.
Hi Carol! I really like that you are doing that. I think many students need those in order to reinforce how to use the library and what they can use the library and the librarian for!
