I believe that it helps them to connect with the other students in the room. It also helps them to connect with the learning outcomes of the day and how they can apply it to their chosen career.

I teach dental hygiene and i find that when i use life expereinces such as working in a dental office, operating my one clinic it really motivates the students. They love to hear stories that help them invision their future.

To make the material more relevant
I believe it helps them to relate to what is being taught, therefore making it easier for them to "get it." It also helps other adults to see and understand that there are others out there, that they are not alone in relearning something new and different.
I enjoy sharing my life experiences in the class room. I think they are icebreakers and helps the classroom setting become more comfortable. Some of the students that share their experiences on their jobs become more confident in what they are doing at school and at work. It helps students when they realize that others have experiences the same situations they have. It also helps them to know why they are in need for further educational opportunities.
Because it gives them a feeling of worth and that we are interested in them as an individual, not just a memeber of the larger group or class.
I always find student with previous careers or experiences bring valuable input and can help me interpret the theories I use in class.
Being an automotive instructor i like to talk about real life experience while I lecture about a certain system it seams to keep the students interested in the subject when they know that you are not just teaching from a book .

Life experience brings new knowledge to the classroom. Adults come to the classroom with a diversity of experiences, both in terms of life and educational backgrounds. Adults have established opinions, values and beliefs. Having adults share life experiences allows them to draw on their prior knowledge and share in the teaching of new knowledge. All students increase their learning power when motivated by a need or an interest. Students learn better when material is related to their own needs and interest and what better way to do that than to present the material through life experiences. Drawing from past experiences helps one another gain an open and diverse perspective regarding classroom learning.
I teach General Psychology, and when students can share life experiences that relate to the topic being discussed in class, it helps them to take ownership of the information. Students learn better when they have a real life example to go along with the concept. Not only does the shared life experience help the student who relates it to learn the concept, but it also helps the other students in the class to grasp the concept.
Using past life experiences and successes in the classroom builds confidence in learning a new subject.
When a student explains that they are not good at something, I try to find a subject that they are good at and try to find parallels that bridge the gaps.
