I have my students Read aloud, I feel that helps students learn to read smoothly, building skills of fluency, continuity and confidence. Encouraging students to read aloud will help them comprehend what they are reading. I am teaching a medical billing class and its is important for the students to get in the habit of reading materials realating to their field

You can provide a few guiding questions to help them as they pre-read for class. These questions help students focus on the important aspects of the reading assignment.

I coud assign vocabulary words for definition and using in sentences, as well as suggesting they write it as it is written phoenetically in the dictionary. Also, I could assign some additional reading to that student, and spend extra time with that student if they want. It would be very important for me to know first if that student wanted my help first.

at our school, sometimes we will have students from other countries. Alot of the time it is helpful to have an instructor read the test information to them and possible explain what certain words mean. I sometimes have to find another way to explain something or have another explain it to them

I generally have them prepare their speeches since they are graded assignments in my class. However, our English and Oral Communications instructors do impromptu speeches in their classes.

We do have a General Studies department at our school. Students with reading and/or writing issues are screened during admissions. They are placed in a remedial class to prepare them for college level English. The English instructors do assist students in developing better reading skills.

Hi Earl!

I have a very good friend who is currently enrolled at a community college. He has some dyslexia and ADHD and has found that peer tutoring has been VERY helpful for him. I am of the belief that support that slows the pace for challenged students works very well for them.

Sometimes,i'll make students read aloud from short paragragraphs in the book and then I wiill explain in plain words what tha paragrapg meant.My biggest challenge is those lon word in anatomy class,in which case I will make my students write the words and repeat,repeat repeat with the correct spelling and pronunciation

reading aloud helps a lot in processing the information in their brain and retaining.

Since we are a Career College, the term "relevancy" is very important. Whether its reading, learning new terminology, or writing papers, relating it to their chosen profession enhance their motivation to learn.

The idea of having magazines of interest in their chosen profession is an ideal way to get students to read. Most students will engage in activities (i.e., reading) that interest them. Other activities such as terminology, writing assignments, and group projects can further engage students in reading activities.

It is important to identify deficiencies early. We encourage students early on to provide documentation to prove any history of learning disabilities. We try to provide support for these students.

Students entering our school are required to take an English proficiency test. If they have reading issues, students are placed in a remedial English class.

I have my students give speeches in class. Some exercises require them to read assignments verbatim. Gaining confidence is a big part of reading comprehension.

I would encourage these students to partake in our peer tutoring program. Such student require additional attention.

I have a student who is an older (49) who cannot read or comprehend very well. I thought about what I could do to help her; after much pondering, I think I might work in a few vocabulary words with meaning - words that have to do with the suject matter that I am teaching, and then tests on those words incorporated with other medical terms. It is essential that students understanding meaning of words when they are learning to abstract physician notes and understand what they are reading.
