in all of my classes there are a number of students where their second language is english.

we try to set up our lesson plans to accomidate all learning styles. Visual, tactile, audio and combination learners who are also attempting better learn a second langauge.

I like to get the student's feedback on what they read from previous reading assignments to see if they have a full grasp on the content.

I think having a stronger student work or team up with the student with reading challenges helps both students by reviewing / sharing for the stronger student and learning by the weaker student.

I think giving them simple short term assignments. Have them read short essays and expain them back to you.

I agree I have actually had a student drop out due to a group (2 person group) assignment that they had to spend 5 min on and then present to the class.

You can assign abstracts for the students. Having the students gain articles in their field of interest and have them write an abstract (1 paragraph, about 10 sentences) requires them to do reading in their field with the terminology that they will be using in their field and then also requires them to apply new terminology to interpret what they read and summerize what the article is about in a paragraph.

As an instructor I can present the content in basic terms, help building their vocabulary. You must be creative using methods that will let them try them out to see how effective they are.
Give them support, even group work. Read the information to them - they can see the printed information - hear it from you and see application of the information. Then they can read and understand the information.

I believe it is very necessary to describe each new vocabulary word in basic terms. I think sometimes as instructors we take for granted that adult students have an more extensive vocabulary than they actually do.

i havent had many in that area

We have a particular student who has difficulty with English. She doesn't have a problem speaking it for the most part, but when it comes to writing up charts, there is where the problems arise. We have worked with her one on one to break down the procedure piece by piece to help her with each write up. By breaking it down, it seems to help her with the way she write it up.

I have had the class take an objective from the chapter and write a short essay on it to read to the class.

Help understand the ideal of grasping the context of what is being talked about. Once they understand the context is what to look for then other supporting applications of that context is easier to gain.

Utilize reading groups and visual aids to focus on their strenghts rather than their weaknesses.

I have always found it a pleasure and rewarding. There is a place for all especially in culinary arts. The hands on is visual and is easily transfered into instant success.

Yes Lawrence, I can imagine that culinary language would be foreign. The positive thing is that the student ends up with something tangible that they can tie the language to where so many times the English language is abstract.

Hi David!

I feel like it might be easier to work with challenged students in your class because it is so hands-on.

I am also a culinary instructor. This I also agree. Using the word in context helps and also helps in understanding the technique in production.

Being a culinary instructor Students have a tough time with all the new vocabulary I give them. I help by pronouncing and using the word in context to help better understand and review the vocabulary everyday.

Give them extra reading assingments

In many schools there are learning aids to assist a student with learning deficiencies. However, in many instances the student is an adult learner and is embarrassed to have their deficiencies discovered. Offering help must be done tactfully. The first primary method that I found is through the grading feedback; I discovered this as my early detection system. During grading, you can guide the student and offer assistance within your comments. Within the comments, offer the specific help you are recommending. Give the student information where he/she can seek and find the help. In addition, provide a message to inform the student how she/he can contact you.

I found that student get embarrassed if they are helped during class. No one likes to feel they do not know. However, if you provide the student the resources the motivated student will accept the office and succeed.
