I really like the way there is more responsibility on the student for the learning. I believe that this teaches them to be responsible for there actions and when you are teaching students to repair vehicles this is important. the students will need to be responsible for the customer's vehicle and there abilities to diagnose and repair the vehicles
Agreed. I think this model would be a paradigm shift for all parties involved. Students must certainly understand the concept and realize the importance of doing the pre-work and coming to class prepared. Many times I find that students wait for me to lecture without taking any initiative or responsibility for their learning.
Zach,
We should be facilitators in the classroom because whether we like to admit it or not, we don't have all the answers. Even if we did, the students gain so much more if we help them find the answers instead of giving them the answers.
Dr. Moody Crews
Chrissy,
Unfortunately many students do feel that they are being lectured "AT". This sets the environment for the entire class.
Dr. Moody Crews
Bonnie,
The ability for students to be able to go back and review the lectures when they need to is very important.
Dr. Moody Crews
Robert,
Four hour classes are a challenge no matter how they are facilitated. It sounds like yours have been a great experience.
Dr. Moody Crews
Rebecca,
This is true and most of us probably do this; however, the difference is what takes place in the flipped classroom when the students come to class.
Dr. Moody Crews
Doris,
The ability to view the lecture as often as necessary until the student has the best understanding possible and then come to class to "fill in the blanks" and put their new knowledge into action is a wonderful opportunity for all students.
Dr. Moody Crews
Anesa,
The idea of an educational guide - wouldn't it be nice if all educators viewed themselves that way.
Dr. Moody Crews
Aarti,
Again, the student responsibility component shows itself as a positive component.
Dr. Moody Crews
Daniel,
I agree that often the material in the traditional classroom can become very dry and non-engaging for students.
Dr. Moody Crews
Laura ,
I think assessing individual student learning is the most difficult thing about teaching a large class.
Dr. Moody Crews
Gerardo ,
Yes, student responsibility is important. Also, time management is a skill that many do not have and this will basically force the student to improve in this area.
Dr. Moody Crews
Ron ,
Very true. We often take for granted that everyone has good computer skills, which of course is not the case.
Dr. Moody Crews
Layovone,
All good points. I do think that most students will prefer this form of teaching.
Dr. Moody Crews
Robert,
Absolutely. In the traditional classroom students only have one opportunity to hear the lecture and if they miss something it may be gone forever.
Dr. Moody Crews
Patricia,
Education has certainly changed over the years. It's nice to see some positive change.
Dr. Moody Crews
Gloria,
Agreed. Getting the students involved in their learning and taking some responsibility for that learning is key.
Dr. Moody Crews
Laura,
True. But I would say that the main difference is the opportunity for advanced learning.
Dr. Moody Crews
The differences between traditional pedagogy and the flipped classroom are fairly obvious. Instead of the instructor being the "sage on the stage," the educator becomes more of a facilitator of the lesson, allowing the students to be responsible for their own learning. I think the flipped classroom caters to all learning styles very well and I like the idea that students (in this arena) become more responsible for their own learning. It is a different way of learning and I can also understand how students/parents/administrators might have difficulty transitioning or adopting this style. Most people (students/instructors/adminsitrators) assume the traditional style of teaching is the most effective. New styles and ideas need to be experimented with so that we can become even better educators.
