I like that students have a choice these days to do traditional or digital. I think the on-line classes are great tfor some people. I personally love on line classes.
I believe the "sage on the stage" is now online or
on a prerecorded video, and when the students do
the homework in class, they are more involved in
their own personal learning. I can see where that
would involve the student using more critical
thinking to find the answers (either alone or
with a teammate).
I believe the flipped classroom allows the students to be more responsible and better prepared for class.
I believe the main differences are that in the flipped classroom the student has completed the reading and assignments, viewed the prerecorded lecture and may have participated in a discussion with classmates prior to the actual ground class.
I believe there is more flexible thinking in the flipped classroom and like the the idea that the student must take more responsibility for what they learn both inside and outside the classroom.
Jeff,
Excellent points. Your point of the importance of teaching students how to learn is something that we sometimes forget.
Dr. Moody Crews
The main differences between Traditional Pedagogy and flipped classroom are:
1. Better use of classroom time.
2. Teaching students how to learn instead of teaching a topic only.
3. Collaborative learning
By Better use of classroom time I mean that things that could be done outside of the classroom, not requiring the teacher, are done outside of the classroom. Think of it as the students getting introduced to the skill. When they com into class they can practice thee skill or refine it.
There is a saying, "Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish you feed him for life." Teaching students how to learn prepares them for a lifetime of learning.
Collaboration is how most businesses are run; new ideas are created; and life in general works. It is a disservice not getting students use to working collaboratively.
Angela,
Is that the only difference?
Dr. Moody Crews
Keith,
I'm not sure what you mean by "speed up the process".
Dr. Moody Crews
Diane,
As you can tell from my response to Cynthia, I liked it too.
Dr. Moody Crews
Diane,
Agreed. Everything you said is true and I think the last statement about "less time for the teacher to help direct the students learning" is the key.
Dr. Moody Crews
Steve,
I don't mean for this to sound uncaring because it's actually just the opposite. There are consequences for everything we do and if some students don't "accept that responsibility" the consequence will be a lower level of knowledge obtained and a poor grade. The problem is, we have taught them that we are responsible for their learning - which is half true. However, it is their learning. I think our job here is to show them why this method is better for their learning. I think we might be surprise at the acceptance rate for this style once they understand.
Dr. Moody Crews
James ,
Agreed. Unfortunately many students and faculty alike forget this.
Dr. Moody Crews
Angela,
Excellent observation. I teach Ph.D. student and I'm constantly telling them that if they are working that hard, they are not doing their students any favors by spoon feeding the information to them.
Dr. Moody Crews
Arthur,
What do you mean by "this" when you say you use this?
Dr. Moody Crews
Thomas,
Yes, self motivation is important. You are also correct that in the flipped classroom it is much easier to go back and review the parts of the lecture that were missed.
Dr. Moody Crews
Angel,
Both are true. However, some students don't like the traditional classroom and some have a hard time staying on track in that environment as well.
Dr. Moody Crews
Quebec,
Absolutely. We all have to lecture sometimes. I dislike doing it and I dislike listening to it. Student responses are similar.
Dr. Moody Crews
The flipped classroom is a pedagogical model in which the typical lecture and homework elements of a course are reversed.
That it could provide the student more responsibility on the student to take ownership of their education. The technology would help through the questions so everyone could see the different things clearer which would help speed up the process.
