Outside the Classroom
Think creatively about the flipped classroom. What else besides watching pre-recorded videos could you have students do outside the classroom to enhance learning?
I think even watching a specific DVD and have the students pull out information relevant to the course. Then discuss this next class session
The other thing that come to me are; student could be asked to complete lab assignments, quiz, test, and most importantly, have on-line decisions with each other and the instructor.
I would also have them complete an assignment related to the pre-recorded lecture. Either complete some questions or prepare a teach back project to share in the classroom on one of the topics.
Related to the idea of actually talking to people in the field that actually perform this task, I am suggesting a field trip as another concept that could be very powerful.
As I stated in prior posts the ability to utilize other tools in learning such as recording student comments this would allow the instructor and the student both to review and compare their level of proficiency in the topic.
I agree with what many others have said, as I teach at a career college also. With our career development class I think that having the students reach out to individuals working in the field they are studying would be very beneficial and open many opportunities for collaborative group projects. They may not be at a point that they can practice skills they observed, but they could not things that they observed and those things could be brought back for discussion.
Bonnie,
I think these are all good ideas and would be a great benefit to your students.

Christine,
Great idea. To have student talk with people who are actually doing what the students want to do is very powerful.

Anesa,
This is a good idea. The focus on "critical thinking" is so important.

Robert,
Very good points. Keeping the students entertained is a challenge.

I would have the students provide an outline of the video and research related articles. I would also ask students to make note of vocabulary (words) that would help them and their peers understand the concepts.
Besides watching per-recorded videos I think it would be beneficial in my area, Dental Hygiene, for the students to do clinical observations with questions they would be asked to answer from their observations. I also like the idea of having them research certain topics, obtain photos, professional articles, and interviewing professionals pertaining to the topics that are being studied.
Think of applying this concept to an office procedures course for adults at a career college. To enhance learning outside the classroom in addition to watching prerecorded instructional videos, students could visit local companies and interview employees performing the tasks the students are learning about and practicing in class. Many students have family members and friends who work in the area or the students may be customers or clients of the selected businesses which would provide access to first-hand interviewees.
Students can also answer critical thinking questions associated with the pre-recorded lectures. This will be an avenue for them to apply some of the concepts that were provided during the video lectures. The submitted answers will allow the instructor to develop which concepts need to be emphasized in the classroom session.
I often have the students bring in an example that matches the discussion topic for the next week. For example, in a class on Entrepreneurial Studies, I might have them bring in a short presentation (5 min) about a company that they are aware of that does not fit a corporate model. I will ask them to have some information about why this company is different, and also to prep some questions to ask me and the class about how this company is alike or different from what we have already studied.
Provide web sites and named videos that would enhance the learning of the subject matter. Find ones that are entertaining as well as informative to keep interest high. This may also encourage the student to seek information on his or her own on line.
Erica,
So very true. We sometimes forget that the knowledge our students gain in the classroom is only beneficial when they take it outside the classroom and implement it. Having those partnerships opens opportunities to do just that.
Dr. Moody Crews
Frank,
Absolutely. And without those out of classroom activities, the student may have never known to ask those questions.

I am a fan of field or clinical observations. These requirements can be done in conjunction with pre recorded lectures to enhance practical application in the classroom or lab. Partnering with entities in the community will facilitate this opportunity, as well as serve as potential employments pools for placement after graduation.
