Patricia,
This is the human side of instruction. We need to show our students that we will listen and support them if they will put forth the effort needed for success.

Shalonda,
Good point about application and relevancy. These are two essential elements of instructional success for students to have shared with them.

it is important students are recognized as individuals

It helps you to remember that they want the information to be relateable. Also, they want to know how the information you are providing is important to them.

It's so important to understand the needs of student. Once identified it would be easy for the instructor to deliver the topic. Student learn differently. Usually I invited a guest speaker, have a goup discussion or sometimes ask student to share in class the good/bad experience that they had in life as a learning tool.

Andric,
In what ways have you see how this information is helpful in your planning?

George,
Not sure what you mean by this. Can you expand on this thought?

Elena,
This is an important teaching strategy. If you don't engage the students during the PP presentations then they become passive learners and miss many of the important concepts being presented.

Kara - I agree; Cosmo students are visual and hands-on learners. Bringing in guest speakers who also demonstrate a particular technique using a live model does wonders to reinforce learning, and inspire students. I have also seen increased student attendance rates right before, during and after a guest speaker visits the campus.

I agree, by asking questions during powerpoints or lecture you find out who is understanding and who struggles, which makes it easier to focus and help those individuals.

Margaret,
I use them a lot in my classes for the benefits that you list. They really get students motivated and seeing themselves in that career area if they work hard enough to graduate.

Jessica,
This is what student centered instruction should be about. Adult students are concrete learners. They want to know the "whys" that go with what is being taught. Once they know the "whys" they become engaged and do great work on the projects that have been assigned.

It helps the learning processes by ensuring that the lessons are tailored to the understanding level of the students. Getting to know your students and how they learn is key to the success of lesson plan executions and reception.

Understanding learner characteristics can help the instructional planning process in many ways. Students love to have guest speakers, which addresses their need to hear from people already placed in the students' anticipated career field.

I agree with the quest speakers. My students really get involved and ask questions. which is very good for them as well for me

I've found that with older learners, especially in my Career Development classes, they are looking for a solid explanation with a solid list of guidelines for projects and assignments. They want to know exactly what is expected of them, as well as exactly what they should expect. Understanding this prevents frustration on the student end, which definitely makes for a smoother running classroom.

For example, I give a lecture and a verbal breakdown of how to compose a resume and cover letter. After this is finished, I pass out sample resumes and cover letters after which they can structure their own. We then designate lab time to work on our resumes and cover letters together.

Eric,
They really help to seal the deal in terms of relevancy and application. They help to make the content come alive for the students.
