Hi Bertram,
For the volume of students and time frame I think you have a very good instructional plan developed. You are providing learning opportunities that will meet the different learning preferences of your students.
Gary

In a class of 40 students, over a twelve week period it is difficult for me to grasp all students learner characteristics, so i have the students take a test to determine their preferred learning styles. I then explained to the students my teaching style and that success or moderate success in my class may depend on whether our styles mesh. I explain to them that I will at times modify my style, but more importantly that they learn to modify their learning style.

An understanding of learner characteristics GUIDES the instructional planning process as well as the classroom management process. For instance, a lesson planned for college-age native speakers of English would look much different from a plan for middle-aged immigrants.

how to work whit students and be more understanding whit then, that they have characteristics not the same

If you know how your students learn ( learning styles) then you can customize your lesson plans to incorporate the stylres that are represented in your classroom.

The characteristics of every person is different. If you understand the characteristics of each individual, you can taylor your methods to try and help the class as a whole.

An understanding of learner characteristics helps me understnd ways to help to get through to my students so they will learn and understand the course or subject being taught

Hello:

As we gain knowledge of our students we should have ready was to involve the students in the course material through their own experiences.

We also have to know what methods of learning our students desire is it Intrinsic or Extrinsic. If we can meet these needs as well we can start to develop a sound plan for the classroom.

We will also have students of different ages and expectations in the classroom. We must be able to meet the needs of each student as they progress through the course with us.

All of these factors open many doors for us in our planning of the classroom and the material being presented.

Understanding learner characteristics is crucial in the instructional planning process for many different reasons, but I will focus on two of them in this discussion.
First, if the instructor understands the different intelligences (or ways of learning) of the learners, he/she will be able to develop different teaching methods accordingly. For example, some students would learn better with audio/visual support, others would learn better by reading and thinking about what they read. Consequently, the instructor would have to integrate audio/visual and reading materials in his/her teaching.
Second, if the instructor knows that some of his/her students have experiences in some areas of the course, he/she should refer to these students in class (asking them questions or having them make presentations). This will help not only the students who have experiences to gain self-confidence, but also the other students to get first-hand knowledge from the experienced students.

Understanding of learner characteristics help in the intructional planning process by reinforcing the facts that students learn in different ways. Thru the intructional planning process information can be presented and questions asked to address the students learning styles.

it will help in planning your lesson plan. the characteristics of every person is different. if you understand the characteristics of each individual, you can taylor your methods to try and help the class as a whole.

I totally agree with the concept that an instructor/teacher must identify individual learning characteristics to effectively get through to each student.
I would also take this a step further by facilitating the student's ability to learn alternative and more effective learning strategies if needed. Sometimes students must be taught to abandon ineffective strategies for effective ones based on their specific characteristics and success history.

It is the basis for creating a solid class and learning experience for the students. Being able to understand the various learning characteristics of students is critical for the instructor to successfully meet the course objectives and outcomes for all students.

When one understands Learner Characteristics, you can take this into account when you plan your lesson and plan accourdingly

Hi Lynn,
Good points about using learner characteristics to target learning preferences. You are able to customize your instruction based upon the information you have. This is a win win for both students and yourself.

Assessing how students receive & retain information is vital for lectures that will engage the student

I think each student has their own method of learning. As an instructor, when I understand the learner characteristic way of learning then I will be able to plan an effective way of teaching that will fit each individualized learner so that they can grt understanding.

Understanding the characteristics of each of my students allows me to tailor lectures and lessons to their needs. Some students do well with straight forward lecture while others need to have information translated into a concept that is familiar to them. In teaching Anatomy, for example, I must be able to analogize body structures to something that a student might be more familiar with - a car engine, an automatic dishwasher, etc., if the student is unable to grasp the concept in a straight forward manner. Therefore I have to allow time in my lesson planning to address the information in different ways if necessary.

I believe the more information I know about my students enable me to provide the best quality education for them.

to deliver different instructional methods to keep the students engaged
