Student Feedback

How can student feedback help you to keep your focus on your students?

having knowledge of what works for the students points you in the right direction for there student needs

not only does student feedback tell you how the student is doing but reveals their experience and if they value what they have put into the course or program. It is a very effective tool.

I agree. Surveys are great, but feedback needs to be continuous. Small group discussion allows feedback student>faculty, faculty>student, student>student.

I feel the instructor should pick up on feedback from students all day, by the students actions and attitude, and everyday. It doesn't have to be a formal form of feedback.

Feedback from students may come from several areas. Of course we typically think of feedback during surveys or questionnaires about the instructor or about the course. However, we also get feedback from students when they complete a quiz. Their scores may give us an indication of what is being retained and if the information is getting to them in ways that makes sense for them to learn. If everyone has a low score, we may want to look at the methods that were used during teaching those objectives.

Feedback helps instructors understand where their students are in regards to the student learning. Our goal, as instructors, is to deliver the material the best way possible. The most effective way to teach a student is to understand how they best learn. Feedback is crucial to the students learning.

James,
This is my approach as well and I have found that I get very accurate and candid feedback. The feedback then can be used as I plan my future courses so I get to see course improvement each time I teach.

It is vital to know what the students are taking from the class, how they feel about the class, and what they are applying from the class to their careers. If the students give great feedback to the instructor, the instructor can modify teaching methods and assignments to better provide for the students.

Student feedback allows me to see if I am getting to all of my students. I addition to the questionaires put out by the school, I like to hand out my own as well, specific to actual class and teaching methods. I ask only for honesty from them and learn how to improve with every responce.

Student feedback is vital because as instructors it can let us know areas that we may need to work on. Or as instructors it may let us know areas the student needs help and may be to afraid to ask.

it helps you stay focus

I love and loathe students feedback. I love it because positive reinforcement is always a good feeling however sometimes the feedback isn't what i want to hear but I take it in stride and as well as an opportunity to grow and better myself and instructional methods.

Student feedback lets you know where your students are academically, emotionally, physically and will help the instructor to tweak their lesson in order to increase student success.

Student feedback can help you adjust your classroom presence to ensure that you are giving students the best classroom experience. It can help increase your student retention. It can also give you insight on what the student’s needs are and if they are being met.

Jude,
Thank you for sharing your experience with us because it illustrates that these types of teaching assignments do happen and that with effort the challenges of the course can be overcome. You did by soliciting feedback from your students on an ongoing basis and made the adaptations needed to keep the course on target and moving forward. I commend you for your effort and the impact you made on your students.

I was in the position this semester of having to take over teaching a class two days before class began. Consequently my syllabus and early lesson plans were more than usually speculative! Student feedback then became my greatest tool for knowing what was working, including scheduling, order of lessons and particular exercises and assignments. I let students know the circumstances from the beginning and we have worked on this together.

Student feedback for instructors is equally as important as feedback is for the student. Feedback helps to create growth. I encourage my students to send out an email after each session to include:
1.Topics that stood out in their mind
2.Likes
3.Dislikes
4.Questions that the student wanted to ask, but were afraid to ask in the classroom setting or forum

This feedback method works really well for me.

I find student feedback especially helpful in determining if I am moving too fast and need to redirect

I find this very true, as it will tell you whether the students like or dislike a certain lecture or lab. This will give you good direction for future lectures. Student feedback also makes the student feel like they are contributing and more willing to participate.
