Robert,
Yes, it will. This is why I also use pretesting to gain a foundational knowledge of what they are bringing into the in terms of knowledge and experiences.

Mario,
Yes, it is and input is so important to start the engagement process for students in a new course.

Lorie,
This helps to close the loop for you the instructor as well as the students. They see how much they have learned and how far they have come and you get to see how they value the content or ways it can be improved in terms of delivery.

I think it is a great idea to ask students what they expect in the beginning and then request feedback at the end of the module.

By knowing their feedback it will help us know were we can help the students on what they are lacking or what they grasped on.

It will make me aware in what areas the students have acquired more information which will help them excel in that area.

At the beginning of each module I will make a list of what the student wants from me as an instructor and what I want from the students. This is a good way to illicit feedback from students.

Tripp,
Good point and one that needs to be considered when doing instructional planning. We need to see our classrooms/labs and instructional delivery through the eyes of our students. This way we can make changes that will increase the engagement of our students.

I totally agree. Most the time instructors can be oblivious to what the students think is important and what has been beneficial in their course. I believe that this stems from the student's point of reference. What I mean is that students see the material differently than the instructor or they have a different point of reference as to the class and its teaching points.

Joshua,
Feedback like this is how we improve so each time we are evaluated we have been given an opportunity to grow and that is true no matter how many years you have taught.

After every class before students move on we have them take a survey rating the instruction. It is a great way to see your effectiness. I like seeing great responces from the students i had that failed. That shows me that i didnt fail them, they see it as they failed me.

John,
Good point. The more ways we can get student feedback the better. This information gives us so much insight on how we can be more effective in our instruction.

I just recently had the pleasure of sitting in on a fellow instructors psychology class and i was amazed at the knowledge i recieved by listening to his students feedback. You truly can learn alot from student feedback.

Todd,
Good strategy because student feedback is the essential if we instructors are going to continue our own professional development.

After every term, the students fill out a class survey on what they thought of the class and the instructor. We use the scores to develop our instructors and find ways to improve the content of the class, or re-direct the insructor to some new methods of teaching the course to improve their skill-set.

Thomas,
Your last sentence captures the essence of instructional improvement. We need to have ongoing feedback so we can check ourselves in relation to how effective we are in what we are communicating.

Student feedback is the only way to understand where they are at and where they want to be by the end of the course. It allows you to understand how much they have retained and how much was lost through translation. Good student feedback can teach you how to teach the class more appropriately.

Student feedback is very important. The feedback is a snap shot of how someone else views your teaching style and methods. This feedback will allow for the instructor to adjust in delivery, or possibly presentation of course content.

Brant,
Good way to keep your finger on the pulse of the class and where the students see themselves in the learning process.

I find student feedback essential to completeness of my course objectives. I periodically give short exams during the presentations to verify their understandin of content.
